Probably gonna get the crap hammered out of me but that's why I don't post. I DO KNOW everyone has their own opinion, even I do. But I read every post put on here. Being a rookie builder I have formed my own opinions but now I need to forum some shock opinions. This part of building a sand rail properly seems like to me it is sheer science to me. Never been around coil overs and by pass shocks and want to build thus thing right the first go around. These puppies are damn expensive so I do not want to m make any mistakes. Also not being able to post pics kill me haven't figured it quite all out as of yet.
Being from Texas especially North Texas there are not a lot of buggies around here. Spending 3 weeks after this thing gets built if ever out west on you guys play ground. And putting this thing to the test. Hitting as many areas as possible within a 3 week period
I need ya'lls help out there. I am building a nice show type quality yet heavily built sand rail here in North Fort Worth Texas. Heavy duty and probably a lot of overkill for some. But not for me. Building it my way and everything I want not what somebody else might want. So please no snide remarks just ideas and correction please.
I have 4x5 rear trailing arms built by a private builder out that ways. I am going to run a coil over with a bypass shock behind it. I like the looks of dual shock and there are a lot of them out there. Plus the shows around here eat them up as far as judging. I have a custom made lower and upper shock mount. I am trying to figure out where in the hell to place both mounts. Like for instance where the lower mount should actually be mounted, how far inwards. And how far up for the upper mount. And what angle if any needs to be added to it and etc.
I have already matched my 930 cv joints or matched them up, you know narrow w/wider point on inside star in the cv joint and etc. Apoligize I do not know all the termology as of yet but will learn it by the time this is over. I will try my best to attach pics if I can, don't think so but is there a standard or and chart or just anything as to where or how to mount these things? I dont want to bend or blow a 800.00-1,300.00 shock out. Every site I go to has their own way of doing stuff. Been like this the while build. Thanks for anyone out there who helps me figure this out. I do appreciate it. Thanks again for your time |

With out pictures of what you have, giving advise is like pissing in the wind.
I use Photobucket and down load my pictures to it. Then use the copy the image link to picture in the Photobucket app. Then to post it here, I go to edit in the tool bar and use paste. It work for me.
What do you consider expensive for a sand car?
From experience with building all different kinds of buggies, once you get it finished there always something you want to change to make improvements.
Finding shock angles and travel requires and you to figure out where your CVs bind. The closer you get to the center line of the axle with lower shock mounting the better it will control the suspension through it arc.
If you don't have Hibbard's book, "Baja Bugs & Buggies" prepping for off road, get it. It well worth it for understanding what the basic you need to know. _________________ Joseph
