Plenty of 019s in the classifieds here for about $100-200 and yes the Bosch blue coil is what you want to use.

The popping in the exhaust on decel could easily be an exhaust leak.
Try new gaskets on the exhaust with a thin coat of 'Copper Seal' on each side of the gasket. If there are slip fittings and clamps for the Pipesyou could put a little sealer there too and re clamp them.
Don't jump all over a $300.00 distributor until you check everything else.

You need to check the distributor you have to see if it is in good shape.
Check to see if the advance plate moves easily and is clean and not worn out.
Get one of those hand vacuum pumps and carefully see how much advance you get at idle when drawing a vacuum on the diaphragm.
Don't just assume its bad.
If you go to a swap meet you can pick up vw distributors for $2.00 a piece all day.
I came home with 13 of them this spring.

I did use all new seals and gaskets on the exhaust but good advice, I will go back and coat them. What's a good torque spec on the exhaust studs?

Going to a big Midwest swap meet on Sunday and Pomona next weekend so I'm sure I will find a nice dizzy somewhere. I wouldn't mind upgrading now on the ignition for the planned Phase II of this motor. Made an offer on a NOS Bosch 009 here on the Samba, but the ad was from May so I'm guessing it is sold. Are there a lot of outdated ads here on the Samba or do they get pulled?

Looks like I just bought this 009 advertised as NOS, made in Brazil. $61 to my door, seems fair.

Thanks to everyone for their advice. With the NOS 009 in place and copper gasket spray on the exhaust gaskets, it seems to be running pretty will now. No more popping or stalling. 850 RPM at idle and 7.5 degrees. Only showing a max of 28 degrees of full advance, is that OK?

But I'm pretty happy with it now.

PS, white VHT header paint pretty much sucks, what was I thinking?

Typical range is 28 to 32 degrees. If the car runs better at 28, then thats a plus.
