Is this the gasket set I need to replace the rear axle tube retainer gaskets and o-rings, I noticed there is a bunch of gaskets and I did a quick search and it looks I need to put several of them. How would I know how many I need to put back?
Not sure if this a gasket set for the whole transmission.

That set will get you some of the gaskets you need, but not all. Between the axle tube flanges and the side covers, you have O-rings. That kit doesn't give you this o-ring. |
I see the big one there but I wonder if is in this set im ordering too http://www2.cip1.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=C24-111-598-051-A |

Tell Rancho you have O-ring flanges on your axle tubes, and ask them to include the right o-rings and the paper gaskets to set the freeplay. |
Will do that. |

It's not in that kit either. But you'll need this outer axle bearing seal kit (x2). Ask Rancho for that kit too. Get 4 of them so you have some spares. _________________

So u are talking about 2 different seal kits, now im lost ?
Do u have a part number of a kit so I can see what you are talking about, I'm a bit lost. I was looking at the parts and gaskets when I removed everything and cant find that o-ring, don't know if there is something different been this car is a 1999 model. |

Driving that distance (500 miles in one day) could affect my engine due to higher rpm's for such a long drive/time? This worries me a bit as I don't know if the engine can handle it. I would assume yes but since I never owned a beetle I just prefer to ask. |
Unless your engine has been trashed and/or modified by someone using the internet for engineering guidance ( ) there is no reason it can't do everything it could do when new.

Besides a .82 4th gear there are .77 and .70 ratio available in the aftermarket. And I thing Gene Berg was selling a .68 4th gear.
They would work to lower the RPMs at the speeds you want to travel with the R&P you have. _________________ Joseph

Found this diagram and I only see the paper gaskets and the big o-ring https://www.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/972663.jpg |

With a 1600 you DO NOT want a 4.12 with .82 4th gear. You do not have enough HP to turn it and the gap between 3rd & 4th won't be any fun to drive on city streets. Stick with the stock .89 4th gear.
A stock 1600 with a 4.12 R&P gear and a stock .89 4th gear using stock size tires will run 75 MPH for your 8 hour trips. _________________ 2017 Street Comp Champion - Thunder Valley Raceway Park - Noble, OK

Thanks for the input, per Bruce suggestion I decided to go the exact way you are suggesting.
Thanks again for the help guys, if it wasn't for your help, probably I would be going 3.88. That its why I love the forums. |
