not sure if I'm in awe that someone COULD spend over $100,000 on this car, or that someone DID spend over $100,000 on the restoration of this car.

That's the car that was (IMO) ruined by restoration. I much preferred the history it showed.

Yes, this special car being restored is tragic. Some people should not have a pen to write all those checks.

I agree- ^^^. When I read the article about in HotVWs- I was mortified it got restored. I too cannot fathom $100k in ANY beetle newer than about 1938.

I stopped reading the VW magazines a long time ago, so I missed that this car had gone through restoration. But I do seem to recall hearing the guy that posted about this car, all those moons ago, saying he intended to fix it up. I had no idea he'd pour 100K into the bloody thing! I think the same result could have been done for a lot less than that, or... a much better result could have been achieved for that amount.

I hate it when a seller put the good side to the camera where it always looks better than it really is. Rolling Eyes

Do you guys think it's rude or ok to ask a seller to have a VW inspection done on a car they are selling? Including compression test? At MY cost?

This is in the case that I can't be there. Hell I've even had them done in cases where I was there. Just about every used car I've purchased I had the owner take the car to the dealership of that make of car. And I paid for an inspection and compression test. None have ever passed cleanly. But I still bought the car. Either at a discount or had the owner fix whatever was wrong. Not talking about a project car here. But one you expect to drive.

And why doesn't anyone list mileage in their ads?! WTH? A quite small percentage list mileage. Even if it's a new engine. It's still important IMHO. Even if it's "Hey the speedo says 15k. But it's obviously 115k or greater.". Just a pet peeve of mine. Maybe it's just me?

I like stock early vw's, a nice custom I can appreciate, but it's stock all the way for me. I see so many custom bugs and buses here for sale it's getting out of hand. Again it's your ride to do with as you please, but stock will always sell, custom stuff slower or not at all. Why do so many think every vw needs to be inches from the ground?

15 grand? Really, again lowered, ugly seat upolstery, missing hub cap, wrong wheels, dented deck lid, worn steering wheel and who knows what else. How about some pics of the engine and under the front hood.

I agree completely. I've seen craigslist ads that are defensive from the get go on their rust covered, lowered, customized, mexican blanket covered back seat, jalopies. "I know how much this is worth man! No lowballers!" Stuff like that. Always cracks me up. Yes. It's a one of a kind. But so is a dog turd. And don't get me started on "VW ratrods".

Don't mean to sound so harsh. But I like original too. All that stuff does is throw money down the drain IMHO. I can see it if you started with a wrecked car to begin with. And you just wanted a driver that looked cool to you. But ya, 15 grand?! Come on. I had a low rider in my twenties. I get it. But the twenties are only one decade. You don't want to spend the rest of your life riding an inch off the concrete having your teeth chattered out of your head.

Rant off.

I'm pretty sure this isn't original paint, and it definitely isn't an $11k car....

AGREED about one million percent. That guy has been pimping that thing on ebay for awhile. Never got above $4100 IIRC.

To bad. Cause I'd buy it for $4100. Which is what it's worth.

Will only go up in value Laughing
Just cause one overspends "restoring" a vehicle, it does not equate to an exorbitant asking price.

So true.. It looks like a $10k car to me max even with all his expensive work he did. 66's are not a coveted year by any means and I think it would be worth lots more if it was a bone stock restoration.

The old "Let's cover it in water and make it look shinier trick!":

I can't tell you how many ads I've seen lately with the water hose still in the picture. From the owner having immediately covered the car in water. Just prior to his picture taking. To, I guess, make the car look shinier. You can even see the wet ground around the car in most of the pics.

Maybe some of them just wanted to wash the car prior to taking their pics. But the majority that I've seen lately - have not dried them off.

This guy thought it would help his paint job. I guess. I'm not so sure it did. lol.
