Just got this installed, replaced my empi progressive 32 36, and I am amazed!
Type 1 motor is much smoother, more torque on hills, and surprisingly much quieter inside. We can now talk in the bus.
Carb is from 1958, right hand side, rebuilt with kit, jetted per performance forums:
Used an old Deano manifold. Added vacuum hose for brake booster.
Fabbed intake from porsche rubber elbow, and 2 inch radiator hose.
Summit racing has better stuff available that will do it: (I may upgrade)
2.25" elbow silicone
2.25" aluminum tube
3" silicone adapter 2.25" x 2"
I used spectre filter, inside modified air cleaner per this thread:

I know borninabus has a zenith, are there more early bays out there with this carb?
I know the buggy guys use it, that's where I got it from.
This carb is very impressive! I cant say enough about it! _________________ 71 deluxe, 1968 type 1 engine rebuilt, 009 distributor, pertronix module, Empi 38 EPC / DGES carb |

they do not make the 32NIDIX, they make the 36NDIX for dual application in Steyr Pinzgauers.
very expensive and not available in the US.

Changed body of carb to P010 type. P010r had slot cut in choke and would leak fuel.
I guess only single carbs choke can be blocked off. Since the block off does not block off the slot.
then had to rejet to 180 (220) air correction and 150 (130) main jets. I had huge dead spot in throttle after losing the extra fuel from the choke. Bigger main jets fixed this. Still figuring it out. _________________ 71 deluxe, 1968 type 1 engine rebuilt, 009 distributor, pertronix module, Empi 38 EPC / DGES carb |

I have a 1500cc with a zenith ndix and I think i am going to go this route so I can use a stock oil back and keep the vapor recovery. Thanks for the pictures! |

After 2 years of suffering with the zenith, I got the jets sorted out. I added a manual choke cable....
BUT cold starting has been a pain forever, it fires, and if you don't catch it and you let it stall, you can't start it for 30 minutes. Once it warms up, runs great, but overheats going up hills.
I went back to my tried and true EMPI progressive 32/36, and bingo starts fine cold or hot, doesn't overheat anymore, and gets better mileage. Driveability trumps zenith snob appeal here.
No looking back, I'm sticking with progressive. Runs and starts just like it used too before I improved it.
Moral:
If you progressive runs good, DON"T mess with it!!!!!!

When you changed the Zenith to the PO10 you should have swapped your manifold to the individual runner type as well. Anyway, glad your bus drives better now. _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |

thanks,
OK, you may be right. My problems go way beyond that I think.
I was given the manifold with the carb, I tried several p06 and p10, accel pumps, adjustments, etc. I just couldn't overcome the hard cold starting no matter what I did. It seemed that there was a spot with the butterflies barely open that would start, too much open or closed and it wouldn't even fire or sputter.
The best way was to crank while tapping gently on the throttle to find the magic position.
When warmed up, it would start no throttle or wide open, didn't matter.
but cold, OMG, what a pain.
BTW, I think this carb is great for buggies or porsches, just not in my bus. _________________ 71 deluxe, 1968 type 1 engine rebuilt, 009 distributor, pertronix module, Empi 38 EPC / DGES carb |
