Just 2 inner splines. I didn't want to be riding on my bump stops and i don't really have anywhere in my apartment where I could notch the spring plates so I didn't go too crazy in the back. |

Thanks man I really appreciate it. I was creeping through your topics to see what your bug looked like, and I think it's the only bug I've ever liked on 8 spokes. Looks really clean! |

So I've been contemplating on what to do for the rear in regards to air, and I think I figured it out. I was going to buy the rear airkewld kit thats $500~ or so but I think I'm just going to fab it up myself, and get someone to weld it for me.
Im basically just going to copy this basic design
The front I'm keeping simple and pulling the adjusters out and using air shocks. Im not sure how long it'll be before I start doing the air in the rear, but hopefully i can get the front done, along with a tank and compressor around the new year. |

Got some time to mess with the bug, so I decided to adjust the valves, which I've never done on this motor. Turns out all the valves except for the ones on cylinder 1 were a little tight, so good thing I did that. I also checked my points gap and drove it around for a bit. Ill start collecting parts for the air ride build here in a few months, maybe I can get a few bits I need for Christmas |

So parts are starting to come in for the air ride system! My amazing parents are getting me most of what I need for bags for Christmas. I'll document everything because I know a lot of people who want to run air on their bugs don't because there isn't a ton of info on what to do if you don't run a premade kit like from airkewld.
Heres the parts Im going with
Compressor: Viair 444c single. $150
Chose this because of the low price, high psi ratings and high duty cycle ratings.
Tank: No Name 8 port 3 gallon ebay tank. $60
Rated up to 200 psi which is as high as my system will ever go. 3 gallons because I didn't want it to take up too much space but I wanted a little bit of size so I could play around with the ride height a bit
Front: Monroe MA756 $60.
Chose this because it's what everyone says to run on balljoint beams. I will be making the fitting on it 1/4" though. I might have to grind off part of a trailing arm but I'll do that when I get to putting them on.
Switch: Generic 120 on 150 off switch off ebay. $20
150 should be plenty, but I can always return it and get something with higher psi ratings.
"Management System": 4 manual paddle valves off ebay. $80
I put this in quotes because it's really just simple paddle valves. 1/4" barbs on them, and I went manual just so theres no more strain on the electrical system, and because its cheaper.
I think I've decided what to do for the rear as well. Im gonna use slam specialities ss-5 bags with these style mounts.
I will be buying new trailing arms this week so I can weld a bag mount into them and then just swap them when I pull the engine/tranny to do the upper bag mount.
Im gonna mount the tank on the parcel shelf, and run hardlines down into a false floor and then 1/4" soft lines everywhere else to keep it cheap. |

Today I bought a generic amp installation kit off ebay, Just for the fuse holder and 8 gauge wire.
I also have a viair 40 amp relay in the mail, as well as some 1/2" npt to 3/8" npt reducers for the bags I decided.
I decided on some I found from a dealer local, that are Dominator II 2500.
They are 2.8" compressed, 10.5" extended, and a 6.25" diameter. These specs seem good and the cost is only $65 each.
I got a reducer because they have a 1/2" npt port on the top.
I also drew up a basic wiring/air line diagram just to make sure I'm not forgetting anything.
Here is everything else I need to finish
4 1/4” ptc
2 7/17-29 1/4” ptc
6 3/8” npc 1/4” ptc
4 1/4” bulkhead ptc
4 gauge 1/4” ptc
2 1/2”-3/8” reducer npc
2 dual needle gauge
1 1/4” plug npc
1/4” copper tubing
1/4” air line
2 Dominator II 2500 air bags
Rear bag mounts (Found some I need on ebay) _________________ Bagged 1970 build: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=606237 |

Did you flip your tie rods? |
Nope. I'm bolting on the air ride soon so I'm hoping it won't really be necessary since most of the driving will be done aired up a bit. But as it sits the tie rods don't hit anything. _________________ Bagged 1970 build: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=606237 |

Since my last post I've gotten a few things done. Pressed out the bushings on the air shocks, put in the ones from some bug shocks, and also covered the panel holding the compressor and tank in black vinyl, since I'll be redoing the interior in that.
I also got the air shocks mounted, as well as the parcel tray shelf and I wired everything up today. They work! I'm so excited. Pulled my grub screws and it goes from on the ground to basically stock height!
Heres a video of it airing out.

Nice work so far on your air ride setup, I may copy your setup. What mounting kit did you use for the rear? you mentioned it was from ebay _________________
