|
|
In my ongoing restoration/education project, I am looking for a motor for my 70 Bay. I am looking for a stock setup. Prefer 1600 dual port, but, I think I can go with a 1500 single port if necessary.
Are there any special requirements for the bus that I need to know when purchasing a motor? I have leads on a 1600 and a 1500 as well as a 1600 thats frozen (with all the tin, I may buy it for that). As far as I know, none of these motors came from a Bus.
If there is literature I can read, say in Bentley or elsewhere, please let me know.
Thanks everyone.

A 70 bus came with a 1600 single port. Here is the bus manual:

Maybe it will help some. A Bentley will have a lot of information as well. _________________ Bone stock 1970 non-walkthrough "Station Wagon" bus

Don't rule out single ports, they play well with the early bus for around town and off roading, mmmmmmmm.....torque.
The critical item when shopping for an engine is the mounting holes surrounding the oil pump, unlike a splitty or beetle the early bay mounts from the rear.
The dual port would be better suited if it has the mounts, better oiling and cooling and you can put single port heads on it if you want it to look right. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Thank you. Great information all around. I am posting from a hotel room so I have no way of referencing my own piles of metal(which includes my bus) or literature...
If I am reading you correctly...a bus motor, or a bug motor with the engine mount adapter kit. I'll be needing a mustache bar as well (?)
The mount looks like so, correct?
Somewhere on this forum I read that these mounts were for temporary use only......

These work, but put stress on the oil pump and may be prone to leaks. Many use them and are quite happy. Try and find a case with the three holes if you can. |

On this fancy looking engine from the gallery you can see the 3 mount bosses for the bar (LH one obscured by oil fitting).
The adaptor works fairly well when installed properly and driven in a civilised manner, but if you are shopping from scratch it's better to just find the right part to start with. _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

My 1st a '70 came with locked mtr. I completely rebuilt it with these changes. New crank,87mm cyls , full dog hse cooling system, dpheads, header & a vw 009 dizzy.Having some parts to test with with I started with stock carb, mi & town ok but lacking top end.I switched to a 2bbl carb & this made the needed top end I wanted, but mi switched to best on road with 2bbl, worse in town. Ran this way 4 a few yrs & a burnt valvve I switched to single port hds but kept the 2bbl, I then noticed the extra low end tq but top was about same, good enuf.On road I usually ran close to 55 & mi around 25mpg, this was with '80' gas, my 2cts. |

Thanks everyone. Very informative posts. I learned alot. Much appreciated.
If anyone comes across a bus motor with the mount bosses, please give me a shout!

We need to know your long term goals for the bus as well as your budget. The reason I ask is that in some cases it might make more sense to start your engine build with a new case. That will add to the cost but probably be more reliable for long term service. You might still want to purchase that core engine depending on the price just for the tin and accessories you could get off it. After 44 years of service most vw cases have used up their useful life. _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

You make a good point about a new case. After 44 years I suppose they've been machined to death, and driven quite a bit.
That's a whole new thread....
I'm flying till tomorrow. When I get home I can dive into that subject... _________________ 1970 Bay Window Bus.

I bought a nice 1600cc turn-key (bus engine) on this site for $1000. It was a great engine that allowed me to get rolling without dumping a ton of money in the beginning. Hit the classifieds and let your fingers do the walking. _________________ __________

Funny you mention that... I just got a strong lead on a motor that originally came out of a 70 bus. Funny how things work out... _________________ 1970 Bay Window Bus.
