Hi, I am happy to announce that I'm the proud owner of a 1971 VW Ghia.

Here's some pics of the new project.

I also have a question...

Is this the gas cap release?

Now running.

The timing was off by 5 degrees. Wouldn't stay running. Video:

Congrats on your buy! Looks pretty good from the pics. And it looks like it's had a bit of body work done (side trim removed/filled in--did the torsion bar covers get filled in too? I can't tell from the angle) and paint, different seats, etc...but looks solid overall.

I think the lever in your pic is the rear hood release. If it's behind the driver's seat...then that's what it is. The gas release should be up under the dash by the front passenger footwell...that's where it is on my '69.

Ah...I stand corrected, that is the passenger footwell...so yep, that's the gas cap release. (The pic angle made me think I was looking at the back seat area.)

If that photo is of the passenger side footwell, up near the bottom of the glove box, then that is the fuel lid release, at least if your 71 is the same as mine. And it was originally a D shaped pull handle. The front hood release lever should be inside the glove box on the left side.

your broken plastic handle is connected to the release latch in the filler assembly by a solid wire. mine was rusted on the inside. i removed the latch housing from the filler neck at the far end and sprayed into the tube some penetrant. the pic shows my later complete teardown.

Smile Don't feel too embarrassed - she still probably can't set the right time on her VCR.

LOL, she's a pretty tech savvy grandma. yesterday I got the rear brake shoes and wheel cylinders replaced. I started replacing the master cylinder.

Needs new brake lines too. The line going from master cylinder to rear brakes, well, broke.

Also, My passengers rear brake drum is clicking when I rotate the wheel...

Guess I need to open it back up and find the problem... First time doing brakes. Rolling Eyes

How do you get the black / plastic handle off of the wire?

My handle is broke and I need to replace it.

I used a vise grip on the cable to get mine to open.

Do you have all the glass and rubber gaskets for the car?

I did the first tune-up since I've owned it. Probably first one in 5 years the way the plugs/plug wires looked. One of the plug wire boots just fell apart as I was taking it off. Runs a lot better now.

Got a new starter on the ghia yesterday.
I still think it needs a new ignition switch.

IT DRIVES!

As of today, my ghia drives. It actually rides great despite the way the shocks look. Steering has about 5 degrees of play before it turns.

I drove it without the windshield, lights or a tag. LOL. Local police gave me the "don't be doing that finger", but they didn't pull me over. LOL.
