I have a 72 bus, took the shifter apart to regrease and clean up. ever since, it wont go into reverse, BARELY goes into 1st and 2nd. I have tried moving the plate around, it just gets WORSE.
Cant seem to find anything USEFUL in the other posts. it goes together well, no fight there, bushings are good. when I push down for reverse, it SEEMS to go inot reverse, but stays in 2nd-ish....
My manual is less than helpful also, it just says to put the shifter at 90 degrees in 2nd gear, and move the plate around. non specifics do not help, I need SOME info that deals with specifics.. |

Check your shift coupler and front bushing.

I have had the same thing happen to me a couple of times. The last time a car park popped it out. Only I cannot remember the "trick" to getting it back in place. You are right. The book is no help. _________________ WIHR

did you mark where the stop plate was before you began? The stop plate has to be adjusted right.
Did you do any other work at the same time and how far apart did you take the parts. Which pieces came apart? _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

So you definitely know that the forward shift rod bushing is good? _________________ Lead Mechanic: San Diego Air and Space Museum

Found the problem, it was the coupler. I just reinstalled a brand new one in there and that cheesy bolt through the piece of bent metal they give you had failed.
so instead of using that ghetto set up they gave me with the new parts, I put in grade 8 bolt with a Nighlok threaded nut. Shoulda done that in the first place. A rolled piece of pot metal and a wood screw don't really strike me as being high tech.
Now it shifts perfectly nice and tight better than it ever has been actually since I installed that bolt, figures.... |

Had the same thing happen to me and found out my front grub screw was loose. The book adjustment is pretty right on. _________________ 1978 2.0L FI Campmobile
