For width variations, are you saying a certain 215/80/14 may work? |
People are running 235/75-15s, and some on 215/75-15s.
235 is a 9 inch section width. So it all depends on the offset of the wheel. _________________ Wash your hands

Again, 215s are too wide and will rub on the suspension. At least mine did. |
Do you know what your offset was? 14x5 wheels? |
Stock 1975 wheels.
To clarify, they rubbed on the front sway bar. _________________ John

The 27's are probably too wide and the 28's are probably too tall. 27 is about as tall as you'd want to run. At 9.5 wide, that'll be a tight fit. When I ran 27x8.5's they just barely fit inside the rear lip's on the outside. An additional half inch on each side (at 9.5 wide) will likely give you rubbing unless you flare out the fender lips on the outside. You may also start rubbing somewhere on the inside near the suspension, but I can't confirm that. |

Lessons learned in a Ford Bronco on 33-12.50-15s:
1) Oversize tires work in both directions. Setting aside the whole engine and gearing thing, they apply more leverage to the brakes. The leverage applied by the larger diameter can turn brakes that are capable of locking up into vague rubbery maybe brakes. more of a mild suggestion than a command.
2) Oversize tires work in three dimensions. Same rim, larger tire, more rubber, more flexing. Sure footed cat turns into bloated wallowing pig with vague rubbery handling and interesting delays when turning into and out of corners.
Turning a tranquil walk in the park into a tap dance in a balloon house inflated to 50 PSI.
Driving a helicopter has been compared to juggling while balancing on a beach ball on the bottom of a swimming pool. It was that bad. _________________ 73 Beetle Baja, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 2220 ( 94 X 80 ), Weber Progressive, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats

I'm running 215 75 R 16s on the back and they fit. i.e. They don't touch the wheel well, but they're very close. I think 225 would probably touch the side.
I'm using Mefro 16" wheels from Van-Cafe. Possibly a rim with less offset would allow a 225 tire.
My bus is custom geared and TDI powered. I would not recommend this setup on a stock aircooled bus.. _________________ 78 TDI Sunroof Bus
