The start
Still on 165 in these pics
One side Close to where I want it. Now on 135 on the low side. Will do the other back side tomorrow and post pics of the car again.
I plan on keeping the rust and the rat rod look. Sorry to any I offend for cutting this car up, it will look very nice once it's complete. This will not be some hack job, I will post pics along the way!! All comments suggestions welcome and appreciated. But if this is not your thing or this make should upset for what I am doing I aplogize ahead of time but let's keep this thread in the positive. There seems to be very little info on tubbing a fasty, so I hope to leave a picture trail to inspire more to have fun with there cars!! |

Looks nice. The front looks like you are running type 1 beam (?) You might look at the rat rod post, there is a Brasilia there that they are tubbing out. Are you going to modify the factory wheel wells & reuse or just build new? Keep us posted. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

I 'tubbed' my notchback and if you're really going all in, it's not that simple if you really want the look. (pro street)
What I mean is you are probably going to want to raise the rear too, not just narrow, otherwise it may look kind of baja ish if you run a tall tire.
With my car, I replaced the whole rear with a type 1, raised the engine 5", and at that point you need to run an upright motor (especially with IDA's), which now you're working on cooling too (new problem).
If you go this route, you'll need sway a way axles/narrowed axle tubes. But then you will probably want sway a way torsion bars, aluminum spring plate retainers, etc. etc. to complete the rear. Then at that point, you'll want a T1 front, which is easier, but a lot of work if you want it done right.
You'll have a hard time doing all that work not going all in.
I can post some pics if you're curious about how it looks on a notchback. |

So I got the car down to 3in off the ground to the pan and The center of the fender lip to the ground is 19 1/2. I am having a little problem with my control arm touching my rims a touch. I took out the front body mount bushings and sucked the beam up as close as I could and that made a huge diffrence on how much the contol rubbed. Yes I have a Type 1 to Type 3 Ball Joint Beam conversion that is narrowed a total of 4" that uses 69 and later Beetle/Ghia Torsions, control arms and after market drop spindles to accept factory disc brakes. Per Pete at Airkewld. He is the person who made me the front beam. I am also looking at going back to standard spindles see if that helps the control arm rub. I am going to run diamond back white walls 135r15 in the front and 155r15 I. The back. I am up 3 notches in the rear with 165r15 and I have no rubbing so 155 will fit nice and lower my back end another 1in or so. The tubbing was not bad at all I will weld up the inside fire wall but I want to leave the open fenders under the hood so you can see everything. I will make it looked finished but still open. Thanks for all the replays and pics so fast!!! Will keep posting pics of the progress and hiccups or what not. |

Thanks EatACactus!! Looks very nice and clean!! Pics look great!!! It looks like I am not going to have to tub the rear!! I am going to run a 155R15 tire and it will not rub!! The fronts are fully cut out and ready to get welded back up!! I got to take the car for a little drive around the block, not far but her first ride was nice!! The car made in and out uf the drive way fine.

One side almost done!! Car sits a little over 2in off the ground!! I have driven it about 50 miles now and the breakin has been great no major problems at all!! Ground control arms down enough they don't rub the rims anymore. Car rides amazing for as low as it sits!! Have to order new white walls and decide if I am going to go red or white rims...... |

Everything is all welded up and coated with bed liner.
Got new rims and tires. Outside of the car is close to finishing up.
Working on interior now!! Putting a custom bench seat in the front with two jl audio tw5 13.5 subs under the seat. One on each side of the center hump. New subs are only 3in thick and box is only 6in deep!!! Crazy new technology! Should sound nice!! More pics to come!!

Looks great, I love a project that comes together, especially when it's a fasty. Type 3s are my favorites. I can't wait to see yours done. _________________ It's not the fall that hurts, it's the sudden stop at the bottom.

you might want to check the junkyards for a small truck bench seat, more comfortable for sure.
or just stop at your local park if comfort isn't important

Agreed. Some S-10 bench seats even have a notch in them, as GM put the cup holders there. That piece could be removed if you needed some shifter clearance. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Wow, all that metal work needed done just for turning radius? I have 145's on the front of mine and havent cut a thing. Narrowed 5 inches too. They definitely rub the inner body on sharp turns though _________________ 69 Squareback
