|
|
I have converted the car to 12 volts. The only thing left is the gas heater. Any ideas on that? I know a voltage reduced like for wipers will not work because too much current is required. Is there some other kind oc voltage reducing device? To change the heater would require motor pump coil valve etc and these parts in 12 volt are hard to find. Looking for creative and safe ideas. |

I don't quit understand why a voltgage reducer will not work. Is it the amperage? 12v to 6v seems simple to me. What am I missing for my learning. _________________ "Sic Vic Pacem, Para bellum - Pray for peace, prepare for war."

It isn't totally crazy to consider a small dedicated 6Vdc motorcycle battery to run your gas heater. Charge at home with a small auto charger _________________ .ssS! |

How many amps does it draw? There are solid state electronic 12 volt to 6 volt converters that are fairly efficient. I bought one on eBay. I think it was rated for 30 amps. Doesn't waste power like a voltage regulator does. _________________ 1958 Karmann Ghia owner |

Not really sure what the amp draw is and maybe it can be converted
I just was worried about what that large motor draws. Not like a wiper motor. Has anyone done this?
6 volt battery is not a bad idea but my battery charger does not do 6 volt and nog even sure where to get a 6 volt battery. I will look on eBay for a solid state voltage reducer. That may be the thing???
Any more ideas?? |

I am guessing there is a heater element as well in the gas heater, that starts the combustion process. That would likely draw the highest amperage. After that, the fan motor and then the least would be the electric fuel pump. I had a gas heater back when I drove a 411, but it only worked when I tested it in the fall. _________________ 1958 Karmann Ghia owner |

You could replace your 12v battery with two 6v batteries connected in series. You can then tap the 6v needed for the heater from between the two batteries, and they can still be charged using your 12v charging system. |
