|
|
I just got a 1970 fastback. I'm having an issue with excessive oil leaking from fan pulley. It's almost like a solid stream. I pulled it all apart down to the block removing all but the back fan plate. Its defiantly streaming from the crankshaft area. I have confirmed that I have 2.5 to 2.7 qts of sae30 oil. Is there a seal that anyone knows about that I could use. This is a carbureted car with dual 34 empi carbs.
Thanks in advance |

What crankcase breather setup do you have? If it is clogged then the engine will blow oil out around the pulley. |

Ok I'll post some Picts as soon as I can. This is a new 1776 and the only breather is the oil stand that's clear and Nothing connected to the carbs. I'm new to having a type 3. I've had several type 1 motors and I always used a sand seal on the crank pulley. |

Because of the fan shroud & it being all closed in the oil if leaking from the top will exit the bottom. There is or should be a bolt that holds the fan should to the breather tower, it needs to be there. Post some pictures of all the motor & we will see if it looks obvious. _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

Without splitting the case is there a way to check? also is it possible that the case was used in a typ1 and machined for a sand seal? |

To check the mains you need to split the case. To see if it was a type 1 case that has been 'adjusted for a type 3 you need the engine number. I think you will need to pull it out & get a better look, sorry _________________ I think he meant "rare", as in "not well-done" |

Could my leak be from a bad pulley? does anyone know where I could get the case specs. im wondering how big the opening for the crank is on the block and what the outer diameter is on my pulley is. I'm sure there is a minimum gap between the pulley and case for the oil to get slinged back properly. |

The crankshaft/bearing/case is leaking not the pulley. 'How to Rebuild Your Volkswagen Air-Cooled Engine' by Tom Wilson is necessary if you are going to fix it yourself. It and cheap micrometers from Harbor Freight should get you started. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

If the pulley was worn wouldn't that cause a leak? |

there is no seal form the factory thus the fan\pulley wouldnt be worn out ive never seen oil pour out of a case im curious to know what caused it tho!! please take pics of what you find!!
also if it was a type 1 case the number is on the base generator stand if it were set up for a bug an on the base of the breather for type 3
if it were a type 3 case from the factory the number will be on the top of the case facing straight up!! |
