Awesome work man. I'm about to start something similar and figured I'd see if it's been done and documented before...glad to see it has! Mine already has a fiberglass kit on it, but like you said, fiberglass sucks. The hood doesn't seal worth a damn, the fenders are cracked around the headlights, it's just complete crap. Plus the metal body that's left is just bent to hell.
Any update or news? _________________ -Romy

Well, its been about a year and a half since I started this thread, and I figured I'd provide some evidence that this project hasn't died off like so many others. Here are a few current pics:

Found the thread now years later. But still, impressive metal work. Makes my fingers itch! _________________ Roger

I have a beetle that I'm going to turn into a baja. I've had ideas on how I planned to do it with nothing but the steel it came with...except for some donor strips to fill in gaps. I had the hood all taped off and everything. I put it all on the back burner for about a year and thought I would do a search to see if anyone has done it...all steel that is. My search lead me to this thread. It's funny because the pic with the tape on the hood looked just like how I had mine planned out. Glad to see it all worked out. I basically have no welding skills so who knows what mess I'm getting into. If I dare take it on, I'll post some pics. |

One more thing....I recently bought a used baja kit....bad idea. Never installed before but it is turning out to be garbage. The hood isn't even wide enough. Has anyone ever heard of that? Plus I'm not even sure all the pieces even match each other. So this brings me back to the all steel idea. |

I'm going to try this on my current Baja project! (Just the hood though) I have a fiberglass hood that was on it before, but since the gelcoat is chipping off and leaving an orange peel surface over the entire thing which is hard to fill entirely, I am ditching it. On top of that it doesn't even fit worth a crap. The entire thing is too narrow, short, flat, flimsy etc. Anyway, this will be my inspiration and my instruction book! Haha.:
EDIT:
not bad for two days and by a seventeen year-old eh![/img] |
