neither in front, the top bow is still visible and what looks to be painted inner roof .
what are they talking about a storage box above the engine compartment ?
did they cut the compartment like in a Single cab or later bus to achieve this.
Also has a rear hatch. cool bus.

To me the two pictures of the walk through above are not the same bus, the right rear shot has a long interior side panel and is a window bus, the left picture looks like a panel van and has no panel on the inside of the long panel. Certainly looks like they are different but I don't have that book to see the text or context of the pictures

you're right Mark, 2 different vans. I feel that they often used these 'wonnabe' cars in the brochures , just to show what would be possible. like the Ford or GM Dream cars of the 1950s. The VW photos are often heavily retouched and we don't know if they ever builldt one at all.still cool pics . Maybe they did a conversion with the luggage box, like they would build an ambulance at the time. only with the usual engine lid and rear hatch. or did they build a third gate for the luggage box ?

Yes, those are two different buses.
One is a walk through panelvan, the other is a kombi with rear hatch above motor-room "portbehalter uber dem motorraum"
Those pics were on the same page of a book I was looking through for images of the M502 option. The book shows some buses that were probably prototypes, at least they had very unusual options. Walk though bd, DD both sides two tone kombi, what looked like Westfalia camper but a kit I've never seen, etc. Could be old promotional pictures.

Luggage box? Do you mean that the kombi has the T panel interior covering the motor room, and luggage area panel on top of the engine compartment? Bottom right pic shows a later version:

Clara,

this is a bit surprising. i can see from your bay picture that there is a cover for the bay engine area.

To me "transport behaelter" is a transport container. not just a cover. In my head i pictured a box of some sort, very disappointing, but logical, of course. are there any other pictures of this?

Maybe they just meant that luggage or cargo could be transported in the box shaped area above the engine compartment?
What did you want more pictures of? The bay panelvan? I was using the pics to show that that sort of interior was used for many years, in barndoors, in regular splits and even in bays. I think it was big with the German Post Office, but I don't have many pictures.
Search for M502 in the gallery.

I know this is off-topic but I would love to see pics of that camping kit you mentioned was in the book you referenced for your M502 interior kits . Any chance you could post some pics? What is the name of the book?
