|
|
Firstly: Can I use an 1984 Vanagon Windshield in a 1982 Westy?
Secondly: I believe the sway bar and the bushings on the front end need replacing. Is this an easy fix? Can an amatuer handle this?
Thirdly: The engine is leaking tranny fluid and engine oil from the seals between the transmission and the engine. Is there a way to change them without lifting the engine out? If not, is there a good guide to doing this type of thing?
Thanks, I might have more questions later. |

Fourth: The van doesn't seem to be getting any heat in the cabin. Is this an easy fix? Is there a guide?
Fifth: The defroster fan doesn't work anymore, although it used to. I just had the front end rewired. IS this an easy fix? Is there a guide? |

Try using the search for a number of excellent detailed instructions for replacing front end bushings. It is not really a hard job, just be sure to securely block the raised vehicle with good jack stands. You'll have the front wheels off and you do not want this to fall on you. Support with only the jack is NOT safe. _________________ '69 Squareback RIP

Windshield should interchange between years. 82? AirCooled? Good luck with getting any heat in Canada in the winter. If you are leaking fluids between the engine and transmission, either the engine or trans needs to come out. PS, welcome to the Samba. _________________ ☮️ |

You have to pull either the motor or the tranny to fix the leak. I'd make sure its really leaking there before I did either. I had to replace a rear oil seal (the one between the tranny and the engine) on mine so I pulled the tranny, just seemed easier to me.
Get yourself a bentley or haynes manual. The bentley manual is nice to have around but sometimes too much detail for a novice mechanic.
Welcome and good luck _________________ Dave

Depending on what's actually wrong, it can be relatively "easy" to get this working again. The most difficult part is tracking down the cables you most likely need to replace or spending money on parts that may need replacing. A common thing to do when the cables rusted out was to wire the flapper boxes open/closed in the fall/spring - you might get lucky and find that the only problem is that your flapper boxes are wired shut.

Invest in a good squeegee and some warm sweaters!
Stock heating on these things is definitely not perfect but it's still a great idea to get it working. At least your windshield will eventually defrost instead of never. I haven't needed the squeegee since I fixed the heat. _________________ 1981 Vanagon, Aircooled 2.0 AFC

If the engine/tranny isnt leaking bad (puddle collects after driving) I would leave it until you NEED to get in there. If you must replace the seals drop the tranny.
If you van is equiped with a auxillary heater then you will actually have better heat than new vehicles. Look for a green nob to the right of the steering column. If no aux you can still have good heat. The lever (second from top) must actuate flaps located near your heat exchangers, part of your exhaust. If those flaps dont open, no heat.
Get a Bentley like others said. You can do this but you need direction. Searching is an excellent source but if you dont know what your searching for than it could take many hours. The Bentley sits in front of you with all the direction you need. _________________ 82 Westy: Air is cool! |
