|
|
I just ordered 4 Continental Vanco 2 185R14C D/8PR tires from Tires-Easy. They showed 8 in stock, I contacted a local "installation partner" listed on the site to confirm having the tires shipped and installed there. I talked to the tech and of course tried to get a better total price for the tires by buying from him. He said he would call me back, he did and said that there was only ONE of these tires in Continental's USA inventory due to the tire being discontinued. I ordered 4 on Tires-easy after that conversation.
I can still remember going with my family to pick up our new 1968 bus at the dealer and looking at the Continental tires on it. I was 11 years old and already a VW guy after riding around in our '62 bus for 6 years. Wow, a sliding door and one piece windshield! 8 or 9 years of New England winters later the jack points offered no resistance when trying to jack the van up to repair one of the original tires on MY first car at the time. I got $200 trade in on a Rabbit Champagne Edition a few months later.

If I were you, I would buy that extra "one" tire immediately. Once a tire is discontinued, you can't get a replacement if you have a problem with one of them. You could throw it into your rotation and use it anyway. I had a problem with a set of tires that was discontinued and couldn't get another replacement when one went bad. It basically makes the three good tires useless if you like a matching set. Buy it now! _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

I will gamble that the tires will last. If I destroy one I will use one of the others as a spare and get another pair of 185R14 C tires. I still have two Agilis tires in that size that are still usable after lots of miles, but they are unavailable here also now.

The mileage you'll get from those tires is amazing.
Here's a pic of mine at 60,000.
I ended up getting a little more than 80,000 out of them.

Dave, thanks for the tire training. There's always something to learn about these things as I trudge the happy road to destiny.
We're planning to go up the Blue Ridge Parkway to visit our folks in Blacksburg , VA for Thanksgiving and hope to find someone at this place . I talked to a feller there last trip and there is now something like 5 fenced acres.
Onced asked the owner, " Why so many?" I heard tell he replied, "Someday, someone will want one and I'll have them all" ..or something to that effect., what about hoarding these? I'm still looking for the "sell by" sticker on mine

Somebody needs to tell this guy that the proverbial "someday" is here today!
Rust is probably actively claiming the anticipated future value of his hoard.

FYI, when ordering from Tires-Easy and using PayPal you need to open the email they will send you and click on the link to Paypal and then go through the standard PayPal thing. I had opened the email once but didn't understand that the transaction was not completed with PayPal. It seems to be lost in translation somehow. This explains why when I was first looking on the site for tires they showed 8 Conti's in stock. After I thought I bought them there were still 8. After I followed the email and actually went to Paypal and completed the transaction I went back and there were now 4 tires in stock.
Sheesh

After reading the owner's posts and pics I'd say his obsession with Vanagons is completely understandable... |

My tires finally arrived, the have a lot of tread and do look like they would be at home on a commercial van. Not sexy at all just a stout, no nonsense tire with a traditional tread design.
