Anyone still driving their VW daily?

I have the eng ready to replace one in my 73 super BUT coming back from circle your wagons last wk end was a eye opener of the 'sanity' of driving a car this small on the I.State. when u r going at speed limit & suddenly u r passed by 2 18 wheelers, 1 normally in left lane & some crazy bastard on the right in the breakdown lane at the same time & startingto move left against u it gets to be a race to slow down before u r side swiped between both trucks. Can't always go where u need to on non I.S. roads, too many crazies out there, my 2cts.

I drive this daily, well almost daily. Drive it to work at least 3-4 days a week and always on the weekends. Unless it's really cold or really hot, then the truck is a lot nicer.

I was driving my 1965 totally stock bug I got from the origanal owner daily, around 30 miles some of which in bumper to bumper traffic and got around 28 per gallon. You can see what I would want in it in the build I'm doing right now

1964 sedan
stock 1200cc 40hp
stock 4.37 trans
stock 165r15 on 66-67 rims with safety bead
30-35mpg
40 miles per day
VERY HAPPY!!! There is nothing like driving a stock OG Beetle, tons of happy people around me and nothing to worry about just get in and drive.
Install the rear pop outs, it got pretty toasty this summer!!

Going on two months straight now.

car 1966
engine 1600 Built from parts of three different engines and old NOS Nipon P&Cs

trans: it may be the original, Clarenced from the flywheel rubbing (PO fix)
tires: Nankang 165/80 R15
mpg: 30 to 35 but less during lower temps.
miles: I set the speed O back to 0 when I got it. Now it's at 4300. That plus at least 100000.
satisfaction level: love it!
wish list: seat padding, seat covers, passenger side mirror

Stock swing axle with close ratio 3rd 1.58 and 4th 1.14
215/75 front 235/75 rear
Averages 23 mpg here at 7k ft elevation with hills everywhere
40-100 miles driven depending on if it's work or out to play
Love it! Gets thumbs up and waves and conversations started when filling up
Still needs more power and I wish it wasn't solid mounted, the vibration isn't fun at times.

Here my daily 1961 Beetle. 1200 40hp, original trans. 2.5" lowered front spindles, 195/60 rear winter tires... car really needs a heater this winter. I installed the heater boxes and I thought I had the exhaust sealed up quite well but the heat brings in a lot of fumes. Any suggestions to not get heat full of fumes???

I've had my beetle for about 7 years now. Haven't done too much to it, just regular maintenance, repairs etc. Have grand plans for it, but they're years off (money). Drive to work most days (I also ride my bike) about a 22 mile round trip, but average 60-150 miles a week between that and errands.

car: 1965 Beetle
engine: 1600 Single-port. SVDA distributor, Solex 30/31, oil bath AF, header and "quiet" muffler; mostly boring.
trans: Stock
tires: 165/80 R15 (original wheels)
mpg: Bad day, 25 (lots of city driving, been a while since tuning). Good day, 35 (lots of highway, just tuned up).
miles: Odometer says 25k, but I've seen it roll over once, and I have no history on it.
satisfaction level: Pretty darn high, really enjoy working on it and driving it.
wish list: Brighter blinkers, paint job, front disc brakes.

Tuba, nice first post after all these years!!

Glad to see there are still some of us out there.

Pauie, if you are still running the stale air heater you have to make sure the copper sealing rings are installed in your heads to avoid fumes. If you have ANY oil leaks in a stale air heat system it will smell.

If you are running later fresh air boxes they sometimes leak where the tube is pressed into the aluminum heat exchanger. I personally almost died due to a leaking box, luckily for me the cheap empi pulley failed causing me to pull over and see what all the noise was. During the stop I noticed the carbon monoxide detector was showing extreme levels inside the passenger area. The only way I would use stock heat these days would to be with brand new boxes or NOS originals, its not worth killing my family or anyone else if I pass out driving just to save a few bucks on a used set.
