Hi Guys,
Topped up my crash box a while ago and recently noticed my wheels appeared wet with brake fluid surprising as master cylinder reservoir has always been empty.
On inspection seems i have been losing gearbox lubricant through my bearings which has contaminated all my new brake shoes and run down the back of wheels.
Can i confirm;
1. Should internal seal prevent this or is ith the job of the metal oil catcher ?
2. As my drums where not torqued up is this why oil could seep between oil catcher and into drum ?
3. I filled gearbox so that you can see oil under plug is this correct or have i over filled ?
Thanks for all your help, |

"Drums not torqued up.." means the big center nut at the end of the axle was not yet turned tight?
The little inner rubber ring behind it needs the pressure to seal the axle.
Otherwise it leaks along the shaft and the oill cathchers are not made to handle that much oil. _________________ Master of my domain! |

Thank you - great, now i know.
One more question, with the car on axle stands i engaged each gear and turned drive shaft.
All seemed to be in order except 2nd gear. When i spun the wheels the drive shaft spun then stopped ?!? All other gears consistently operated.
Any ideas on how to test correctly with no engine and shell off ?
Really don't want to finish resto to discover gearbox has issues.
Thanks, |

Here you see all seals you need.
This is the little rubber ring broken. It only seals when the big nut is tightened up. _________________ Master of my domain! |

Clean shoes with brake cleaner chemical and then take torch and burn remainder out of shoe. Don't need to go to hot |

An old trick to overcome this problem of contaminated brake shoes, is to boil them in a pan of water with washing powder, as you would say a dirty towel. It usually brings the oil/grease out a treat. |

While you are in there you might check for wear on the bushing, #8 on the exploded diagram above. I had a bug that leaked even though I replaced the seals and the culprit turned out to be this bushing. It was slightly worn and would not make a good seal. After I replaced it I didn't have another problem. |

Man, that's aggravating. I feel for you. Where did you get the seal kits? I'm finding, as I order odds and ends for my Oval, there a lot of CRAP out there.
How about a set of stainless steel moldings I bought a month ago..The hood piece doesn't have a finished end so it will properly interface with the hood crest. It sits ON TOP of the crest.
You know what they told me when I called them to see if they had sent me the wrong part?
1) - Grind it down so it fits to your liking.
2) - If you don't like it you're free to send it back. At my S/H cost.
Sorry, not to hijack, but I was just wondering if inferior parts are the culprit in your case. That would really piss me off if I were you. |
