Hello - We are excited about our 71 FI square-back with a 1600 motor in it. We have other air-cooled but I might have a dumb question. The pistons/heads I need to buy as its seized up, would just be for a 1600 motor correct? No special FI heads/pistons for it? I am looking for a way to manually try to turn it over by hand as well? Plugs are removed and oil poured down them to try to unseize it. I am just wanting to put in new heads/pistons and wanted to make sure I was right.

Sorry feel silly asking..

P/C sets are the same, but FI heads have a boss and maybe machined hole for the head temp sensor on the 3/4 side.

Don't order parts until you get the engine out and the heads off to see what the heads, pistons etc look like. You can't do a good job with the engine still in the car. 'How to Rebuild Your Volkswagen Air-Cooled Engine' by Tom Wilson will teach you how to rebuild it. Cool

Thanks for the advice. We finally have the engine pulled and the bolts are soaking in PB Blaster right now. We removed the FI system softly just in case I wanted to put it back. Do they make an alternator that lays down like the one in my engine picture, since this is a generator? Also since I am switching to dual carbs and I dont have the linkage bar, any good recommendations for some?

Thanks in advance

No lay down alternator, although there is a post here on a swap out kit. Jaycee sells a great carb linkage set up, if you are buying a carb kit it comes with a linkage. If you can & have all the bits, saving the FI would be the wise move. Lots of info & assistance here.
