Actually, I pulled the entire rear end out of my Ghia and put it in the '64 bug. I had a pro street box, short axle assembly, with 100% new braking components on the Ghia, except OG '67 backing plates. I converted the bearings caps over to the early style back when I did it, along with the 4 lug conversion drums that have had the snouts milled for short axle. I will eventually run a 4 wheel disc brake setup on the bug, but want to just swap rear ends and drums on both cars. Bug is all done...adjusted and bled. Waiting for tags to drive it. I have the conversion drums on the Ghia...but with the '64's rear end with flat adjusters/flat shoes. The 4 lug drums seem to be ok and make contact with the axle spacers. I will have to drill holes for adjusting stars. It is just a temporary setup...just trying to figure out if anyone has done this and if it is safe. Not drilling, but the 4 lug drum on early backing plate with early shoes...and the early drum with 65-67 backing plates and shoes. Both cars are early short axle assemblies. |

Okay, so you're using 4-lug swing axle drums with the snout machined for short axles with '65-67 backing plates on the '64 beetle and '64 backing plates with 5 x 205 mm drums on the ghia?
I don't see why it wouldn't work. Both use the same diameter drums and backing plates. The only difference is that the 4 x 130 mm drums are designed to use the '68 and later 40 mm wide shoes instead of the earlier 30 mm wide shoes. Years ago, I had a friend who swapped from 5 x 205 mm wheels to 4 x 130 mm wheels on his '64 beetle by running 4 x 130 mm discs in front and '68 swing axle 4 x 130 drums on his existing backing plates. _________________ 1966 Karmann-Ghia convertible |

Sorry for the confusion. Ghia is still getting 4 lug drums on back, just the whole brake assembly minus drums, off the '64 bug. I originally wasn't sure about the swap being safe, as far as drums seating and shoes contacting properly. As long as those are ok, Im good to go. Thanks |
