Starting to think my idle cutoff solenoid took a crap on my 34-3. Just got my carb back from a full rebuild and it fires right up with the choke closed but once warmed up and opens the motor stumbles some and dies. I can only keep it running (not well) by keeping the throttle 1/2 way open constantly and hear it miss or make a thud sound sporadically every few seconds . With the choke closed it fires right up and idles at about 1300rps. I checked my cutoff switch and have voltage at the terminal when ignition is on but don't hear or feel anything (plunger moving or clicking) when I install/remove the terminal. This is the original cutoff Im sure but worked fine before I had it rebuilt. Could a permanently closed plunger cause my issue or would I not get it to run at all with the choke closed at initial start up? What about clipping off the plunger just to see if I can get to idle? I need to tune the air/fuel still but cant do it if it wont even idle. fast idle and air/fuel seats are backed out 2 1/2 turns but seem to make no difference in running.

To test it see if it clicks when applying and removing power. Click click click.

I hear and feel nothing. If this was stuck in the "out" position would it completely keep the engine from running choke or no choke? Like I said it will run with the choke closed but once it opens up the motor stumbles then dies. wasn't sure if the cutoff and choke are on different fuel circuits

Pull it out and see what you have - might be stuck?

When the cut-off is not engaged it blocks the idle fuel to the engine. When functioning properly, with 12v power applied the solenoid engerizes, this allows idle fuel to flow. You may cut the end off, in the event it does not energize. Do this and see if it idles.

Idea Before Cutting that nubb off look behind the Choke housing for the Idle Jet and loosen 1/4 of a turn....if the carb works then you know the problem source.

I always cut off the nubb or put a copper washer under that Idle Jet to solve the problem....question is ...which one will work.

pulled the carb and removed the cutoff. put 12v and the plunger wont retract on its own unless I push it in some to get it started. Getting replacement hopefully today or tomorrow. Thx.

You don't need to pull the carb to remove the idle cutoff solenoid. Cut the plunger off and stick the idle cutoff solenoid back on the carb and see if it runs...

I had to pull it to get a wrench on it properly to remove (literally 2 mins). Already picked up a replacement today from another VW'er. Do these need to be sealed in any way (washer or thread tape)?

I never have and don't believe they do.
