It was particularly hard for de Cesaris to win races in his early years because he did not finish many. Only 21 when he began his Formula One career in 1980, driving for Alfa Romeo, de Cesaris was mercilessly fast and bold — and often out of control. He earned a nickname early on that stayed with him: de Crasheris.

Nelson Bunker (Bunker) Hunt, one time billionaire Texas oilman who, with his brothers, tried to corner the silver market in 1980 with disastrous (for them) results, dead at 88. He declared bankruptcy in 1988 after, for various reasons, blowing through some $16 billion. |

Damn, fortunate enough to see him live as Jack Bruce and Friends. One of the best shows I have ever seen & I loved the Rocket 88 album. Just a fantastic musician and singer. RIP |

In his 1988 memoir, Donald T. Regan, a former chief of staff for President Ronald Reagan, revealed what he called the administration’s “most closely guarded secret.”
He said an astrologer had set the time for summit meetings, presidential debates, Reagan’s 1985 cancer surgery, State of the Union addresses and much more. Without an O.K. from the astrologer, he said, Air Force One did not take off.
The astrologer, whose name Mr. Regan did not know when he wrote the book, was Joan Quigley. She died on Tuesday at 87 at her home in San Francisco, her sister and only immediate survivor, Ruth Quigley, said. |

Maybe only a celebrity in New England, but Mayor-for-life Tom Menino died today. Affectionately known as "Mumbles" for his incomprehensible speech:
