I am going to open a thread concerning that build I am planning on it since several years ago.

I have a 1960 SO23 westy, which has right now a 1600 Cc in it, however I am planning to restore the original engine that should have been there since start, it is not the original one but period correct.

So here is the 40HP engine known as the bastard engine.
That engine was made as transition between the 36hp and the commonly used 40HP from 60's.

Mine appears to be an exchange case because of the TAG number on the case X6027.

That engine will require a full restoration, but with time and patience we should bring it to its original glory:

Here is the Judson supercharger I got in the box since several years.
It is NOS, with all required NOS pieces, such as the marvel oiler mystery, fram filter, 28 PICT carburator.
The belt is also original with its judson tag:

a NOS Judson is a nice thing to have. Cool

I was a bit worried when I saw how many of the bastard bits your engine is missing, but after reading your garagejournal thread, I'm expecting nothing less than perfection.

You do realise there will be a clearance issue with the aircleaner if you are installing your Judson in a post '54 bus Jerome?

Hi John,
I know I'll have some clearance issues to address, and I will probably have to narrow the intake and customize the air filter to make it fit the engine space.

That's exactly why I started that discussion thread, to share my finds but also any questions I'll have to get those challenge addressed.

I hope this will also help other guys who might want to run into the same modifications.

/Jerome

i have seen a 40hp (I think) manifold with the carb flange lowered to fit a Judson in a ghia without cutting the decklid, so it can be done. it was hanging up in the garage of a ex vw mechanic's shed having been pulled when the Judson was removed prior to a customer selling the car back in the 60's.

the other option might be trying a solex 32 PHN sidedraft off a single carb type 3.

Does not look like a Bastard at all to me. Wrong Carb, Wrong Distributor, wrong Cylinder Tins, Wrong Fuel Pump, and if the case is a rebuild, it likely has the thrust bearing in the back, so I think it is a normal 40hp engine. I could be wrong, but nothing looks bastard to me.

I know those part are wrong and I am in the process to get the correct period parts.
Once I will have removed the flywheel we will be fixed if that's a bastard or not.
If that's not a bastard, my plan is to put those parts I am collecting and make it look period correct.

Not a bug deal here Smile

Cool. Out of curiosity, when this came out, how much increase would a person see by adding this to their car?
Because didn't the original box have a picture of a rocket on it?
Pure Power!!!
