I am a newbie to the VW world. I have always wanted a bug and am now in the position to buy one. I'm looking at a 57 oval window that has been restored. What would something like this be worth? Any feedback would be great. Thank you

So many things have been changed and updated on that car that whether or not the '57 body and pan are an exact match isn't that much of an issue. _________________ We are striving for perfection, to make our cars run forever, if possible.

I believe that car has been on craigslist for a while up here. Just a couple observations,
- has the cheap aftermarket bumpers with the overriders tube grommets to fill gap from misfitting tubes, expect the bumper chrome to show rust soon if stored outside (and rear bumper is 1967 style)
-hood is missing Wolfsburg crest and has wrong emblem, wrong hood 100%
-rear fenders appear aftermarket based on misplaced taillights
-wrong rear apron
-un pleated seat upholstery (low cost)
Good, appears to have OG decklid and doors, and all trim inplace
IRS pan should drive nice even though. May be an excellent car and a good driver, but at first glance appears like it may have been put together without much attention to originality including unoriginal body panels so if you pursue further please consider the value of the downgraded/low quality items versus original items |

remember to always check vehicle numbers match title, physically check them. This is especially important on cars that have had pan swaps. There are other titling issues to consider on cars with swapped pans that are worth checking out. A swapped pan is not a deal breaker if originality isn't extremely important to you or a future buyer, but the paperwork is very important especially if the vehicle will be titled in a new state and require a vin inspection. If paperwork doesn't jive I would avoid completely. |

Pictures can be deceiving, but the car looks really clean and odd that someone would do so much good work and not catch the details listed above.
Bumpers are an easy fix, front hood can be changed, but will cost a pretty penny to get the correct year and repainted. The rear apron would take a lot of work now that it has been painted and put together. The seat upholstery is not the stock pattern, but looks very clean.
The separate pan wouldn't be deal killer for me, but the cost would have to come down 4-5K. |

To a "Non-VW" person...he might get 16k, someday. But you are here...on the Samba. You ARE a VW person... walk away from this one. If you have the 16k to be thinking about buying this car....you will find WAY nicer cars on here for cheaper. Check out this 55' bug on Craigslist....http://spokane.craigslist.org/cto/4720804948.html
Pics aren't in his ad anymore, but the black car is NICE. And you probably have a little wiggle room in price. It's been listed for quite awhile. |
