Congrats! The Van looks incredible!
Now that you are up and running, and getting some miles behind it... What sort of fuel economy are you seeing?

Let me know when your going to be further down south near San Diego. It would be nice to say hi before your boarder crossing. _________________ I'm not a mechanic, I just play one on the internet

Post up if you will be stopping off in the San Luis Obispo County area. I'm sure there are some people around here that would love to see your van and wish you well on your trip.

#TBT
bunch of stuff that got done before the departure I had no time to post...
stealthy Focal sound system:
slight cut in panel
6.5" Focal speakers fit perfect
Cut the original speaker cover so it does not touch the 6.5 speaker
secure tights with elastic and glue so there is no see through for the curious
Glue cover with gorilla glue
So far after all the speaker installs I've done to vanagon I find this one to be a good alternative in keeping a good discrete original look; window crank clearance and sound. Very amazing sound!

Very big thanks to them!

Currently in Troncones Mexico. Amazing town and waves using the Cafesol Internet...
Still doing over 400 miles per tank even though we measured with 5850 lbs before our ferry from Lapaz to Mazatlan.
The syncro is working amazing.... did not get stuck yet in 4wd (had the rear wheels spin many times on sand beaches but then pulled the knob .
I impressed a Toyota Tacoma that was struggling through the sand trails by following them and making it through it with a couple of attempts... that sand will bury you easy with the wrong angle...
Anyway, waking up in the van everyday on a different place (beach) and awesome nice locals is priceless.
Stay in touch

Hey from Guatemala!
The Fox shox has been on level 1 since Baja and they work incredible on the beated up roads
Few blemishes so far:
1/ Long distance high output kit relay has burned
Probably not a good relay that came with the busdepot kit.
2/ skid plate is interfering with exhaust system under extreme load
.. need to spend some time to resolve this. I found out the soft bushings of the RMW engine mount ads up some movement to the original engine mounts (too much flex)
3/ after only 10000 miles the front right Empi cv start make some noise (chklonk) at slow speed and turning
(I have a replacement on the roof rack) I do not want to do that job on the trip... especially that I have a sweet alignment setup :-/
Brake system is amazing. After long days of abuse with 6000 lbs on mountain I did not feel fading yet.
Nothing major that is stoping us so far. Still hauling ass

So, speaking of bumpers, and I apologize if this has already been covered, but can you point me toward the build of your front bumper? I agree, it's the nicest I've seen. Looks like you went with the RMW for the rear? How do you like it? |

I guess for a 2wd van the lid would have to be raised by about an inch. This could easily be accomplished with some clever work to one of the early steel engine bay lids.

Hi All,
First off congrats to Greg on his pioneering work here. This is an awesome project. I just spent the last week or so reading and getting edumacated on all things Westy on theSamba, but I have to say, that for me this has been one of the most inspiring threads. So much so, that in fact I have now decided to do my own conversion.
I'm a Samba newbie and recently acquired this 1990 2wd Westfalia that needs an engine and I am extremely interested in going with the EE20. However, in the quote above, from page 11, D Clymer is saying that we would need to raise the lid on the 2wd. Is that true? Is there really a difference in engine bay size between a 2wd and a Syncro?
Here is a pic of mine:

^^Not a diffrence in engine bay size. The syncro driveline rides almost 2" lower than the 2wd, which lowers the engine position.
