Interesting article. Still prefer dual quiet packs. If you want to do a mondo muffler style and want max performance, you may wish to consider pairing one up with CB's 1 3/8" merged exhaust system:

http://www.cbperformance.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=3674

It's a true merged exhaust (look at the length of the collector) and not merely a standard 4 into 1 extractor like the link from MAMW you posted earlier.

Can you use thermostat & all the oem tins below with this CB 1-3/8 exhaust system? The answer is no. Sad

You'd probably have to rig something up, as is the case for every true merged system with the possible exception of the Bugpack Street Max and others made to be run with the Dansk flanged 1 1/2" heater boxes.

Ive pretty much landed on 4 to 1 extractor sytle.
Midamerica has a 1 3/8" 4 to 1 extractor style, 304 stainless steel with j tubes
and has a stainless fat boy muffler that I like as well

http://www.mamotorworks.com/VW/product/turbo-muffler-stainless-steel-bug-ghia-1966-1974-323168-4

I like the fact that it is all stainless steel and the idea of getting rid of my heater boxes and wrapping the exhust (I know some are against this) with some good header wrap (I dont drive in rain, its a fun car)

Ive read that UK magazine concerning exhausts and the best performance was the 4 to 1 with a single glass pack but if I buy something I want it to last. Will a glass pack be better performance wise vs a fat boy muffler?

Is vintage speeds setup a scavenge style?

Also Ive noticed they have ceramic coating on the merged header
http://www.mamotorworks.com/VW/product/ceramic-coated-header_313049

Want to stay the heck away from empi.

Did you buy the stainless steel exhaust system?

My appologies for the late reply.
I went with the mid america stainless 1 3/8" merged 4 to 1 and the fat boy.

The quality looks pretty damn good, the guys at the shop liked it. The 3 bolt flanges, however, were warped so I need to take care of that.

Im also having a fitting issue between the fat boy muffler and the header itself, it also hangs way to low for my taste as the pictures show it tucked up nice and neat.

Looks like we are going to pie cut it and weld it back up.

I was kinda pissed last night after trying to add the muffler a 10pm and the fat boy not fitting (it hits exactly where the jtube/heater box connects)
But other than that Im pretty happy with it.

Eh? Can you post photos of the modifcation you did to the exhaust system to make it fit nice? I also bought the same exhaust system from Mid America because it was made out of Stainless Steel.

Ok, so the header was pretty nice and went on relatively easily.
I didnt have the industrial tins and stuck with my heater boxes for now, will eventually install supplied J tubes.

I am to believe that this is actually an EMPI header which kinda shocked me. MA doesnt have this listed as an EMPI header so I was kinda bummed by that as we all know EMPI sucks.

Any who, the fat boy didnt fit for crap and it did hit at the banjo clam thingy that connected the header to the heater box.

The muffler itself also hung down WAY WAY WAY to low.

I work at a place with access to TIG and my friend helped me weld it.

The biggest concern is the flange and how the collector points down to the ground which begins a mass of problems, if it were straight it would be fine.

We started by cutting off the flange from the muffler side

Then sanded smooth and flush and bolted to the header which is the first picture.

I held the muffler up where I wanted while my friend made the pie cut line
in silver sharpie

We didnt actually cut it that much but we cut it maybe an 1/8 to 1/4 from that line actually then test cut off of that. Not really precise.
You can guestimate here

We tried welding it on the header straight but it didnt work. So he sharpied notches to line up and bench welded it tacking it in place.

We fit it on before fully welding. Saw it was good and he went to town.

Engine seemed to run much hotter but I need to tune it more.

Yes,But even for stock engines it would make installing it much easier.
Have you try installing a header on a stock engine before? I have, its a real pain. Mad

If you have a torch and a mallet steel is easily adjusted...

Is there a nice 1 3/8" header in stainless that doesn't come with j-tubes? I'm thinking of a stainless with heaterboxes on the next build.

This S/S header is available from Empi. Without J-tubes.
