Hi All,
I have recently got myself a Karmann Ghia (barn find). The person that I got it from said that it was a 1959 model. I would like to double check this detail.
When I have checked on the internet the chassis number/engine number I come up with nothing. Could anyone suggest a way to verify the year model I was given?
Regards John (Sydney, Australia)

Did you look here?
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/chassisdatingkg.php
For '59 model year look from Aug 1958 thru Jul 1959.

What are the first few digits of your VIN and engine serial#? According to the above the VIN should be between "1 774 681" thru "2 528 667" and engine number "1 937 451" thru "2 156 322" for a '59 model year.

That VIN is from a Beetle. A 1970 Beetle! Is this the VIN from under the rear seat?

Are the VIN numbers under the rear seat (in front of the shift rod coupler plate) and the one on the plate in the trunk (at the right front inner fender near the spare tire) both the number above? See '59 Ghia Owner's Manual example here:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/4_59ghia/8.jpg
I'd expect at least the VIN in the trunk to match the '59 model year range listed above. Otherwise what proof is there that this is actually a '59?
The VIN listing indicates that '59 was the last year for the low headlight light front end. Is this what you are basing the '59 model year on?

Any chance you can post a close up pic of your engine serial number? I couldn't find a reference to an engine serial# that started with "S".
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/engine_letters.php
Even the VW engine letter code book only shows S engine codes belong in an Audi:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/engine_code_letters.php

I was thinking it could be "AS" but there would then only be 6-digits after the S, not the 7 you have indicated.

WOW! Shocked
You have quite a bit of work cut out for you.

The whole front clip from the windshield to the headlights appears to have been cut and separated. Makes me wonder if it isn't from a different car altogether?

Good luck! Cool

Here's info on the part numbering system (includding chassis):
http://www.aircooled.net/vw-type-system/
http://www.aircooled.net/vw-part-numbers-explained/

The front front fresh air grilles indicate 1960+
I believe side view mirrors were located on the front fenders up through '64... your passenger door has a hole for a door mounted mirror ('65+).

1959 & earlier had different fresh air intakes, head lights, tail lights....
Here's one... note the differences mentioned & you can see the ID plate location in the trunk in one of the pics
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1722388

From: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/info/bugchassisdating.php
"The 3rd digit is the model year, i.e. 5 indicates 1965."
110 = 1960 beetle
But... I'm doubting it's a beetle floor pan:
"Q. Will a Ghia body fit on a beetle floor pan?
A. No the Ghia floor pan is almost 7" wider. The beetle pan will not work. "
from: (Ghia FAQ) http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=67460

Post some pictures of numbers/data plate.

Is it a 1960 or a 1970 beetle .I think it is a 1970 beetle sub frame as it has a ball joint front end and a IRS rear end . Maybe some one along the line fitted the Karmann Ghia floor pan . who knows ???? . Hopefully soon I will be speaking to the original owners who may shed some light on the car. Smile
