I have a 74 Thing and I'm looking to replace the transmission. What other air cooled transmissions are compatible with the Thing - any IRS tranny? |

Yes, any Type1 IRS trans can be compatible, but CV joints are Thing specific.
You will have to do a mix of parts. _________________ 1976 181/Thing, 1967 fastback, 1973 squareback, 1964 microbus, 1967 Double Cab, 1969 westfalia (currently under resto), 1972 LM1C dune buggy, 1974 jean's bug, 1974 1303 (super beetle, currently under reassembly after new paint). |

You may also have to use a different transmission mount. I have a '75 bug transmission on my Thing. I had to find the mount with the 3 studs:
You could also switch out the nose cone, but I thought this was easier. _________________ Mike B. |

remove the Thing CV flanges before you have a transmission rebuilt. they tend to migrate if not watched carefully. _________________ 73 Beetle Baja, Ghia front brakes, Type 3 rear brakes, 2220 ( 94 X 80 ), Weber Progressive, Bosch SVDA, '97 Mustang seats

Only at a shitty trans shop. If a shop steals your flanges, they are a dis honest shop and you should stay far away. _________________ There are no stupid questions, only stupid people,

You're generally better off rebuilding your original Thing transaxle, as it has a better R&P than compatible (non-Thing) replacements. At the very least, don't turn your original in as a core. Keep it for future rebuilding. _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

As a builder, I would advise you to rebuild yours and only a dishonest shop would take your CV flange. |

Did a little gear work also. |
