Uruguay’s President José Mujica, known as the “poorest president in the world,” declared in 2010 that he had no assets to his name except an aging blue Volkswagen Beetle. Soon, that may no longer be the case: The president revealed that a wealthy sheikh offered him $1 million for the 27-year-old car -- and he’s considering it.
According to the weekly Uruguayan magazine Búsqueda, the million-dollar proposal came from an Arab sheikh Mujica met in June in Bolivia, during a meeting of the G77+China. The car is currently valued at around $2,800, according to Mujica’s latest financial affidavit.

Rather than take the money, one need only 'consider' an offer/bribe like that :
a) if one is as dumb as a brick
b) one fears one will be caught for the illegality or immorality of the reciprocal action to the bribe and one needs time to line up ones ducks/scapegoats and alter a few laws...
c) one is being setup publicly to be accused of a) or b) above whether they be true or not
d) one feels it is not a fair payment and intends to negotiate because the tyres are good for another 2 yrs
e) one feels they are being morally or ethically tested
f) one does not in fact possess the title to the vehicle for reasons of illegal actions or incompetence

He is the ONLY politician I have ever had any respect for. He embodies what used to called a "public servant" protecting the "commons" (air,water,land) for the masses. Yes, I was raised in the old days of civics classes in high school. Now we have corporate stooges, may we learn from our wiser neighbors from the south.
