Is there such a thing as a true bolt on fuel injection kit that a novice can install. It's gonna be a long winter and I'm looking for projects

If you mean bolt on in a couple of hours then go driving with no tuning? No.

Increased TQ should be a natural byproduct of a properly tuned and set up EFI engine, that's its strong point. Manners as well, but how well can you tune it? If you can't tune carbs, you'll likely fail miserably at FI.

CB Performance makes a nice, very complete FI system, simple to install and tune. Give them a call, and tell them what you are looking for.

They have several kits now, so a new one soon will give you a nice choice.

There are several kits about that will "bolt on." Some, like CB's "Quick Tune," use closed loop to "tune" it to your engine, but this will not be optimal (and you have to weld an O2 sensor bung into your exhaust,) but will probably run as well as if you just bolt a set of "pre-tuned" carbs on. To really get the benefits of EFI you want a crank trigger and to spend some time tuning, the best allow for sequential operation at low engine speeds, advancing the injector timing with speed, Idle control, sequential spark and all sorts of goodies to get the most from your engine.

If you want a bolt on system then Mario at thedubshop.com is probably the best you will find. Mario is a wealth of knowledge and his customer service is awesome. I chose to build my own system and had lots of help from many great people(including Mario and Miniman and many others) I have learned much about FI during my quest. It really depends on how you serious you are. I have been trying to help a friend tune his CB quicktune system after he saw my Megasquirt setup and was quite surprised. Megasquirt offers many advantages over any of the other systems that are available.
good luck
Kenric

You can "bolt on" many systems, but they still must be tuned to your motor. The hardest part, IMO, is getting an optimal spark map, after that, the fuel map can be easy, again depending upon who and how it is being tuned.
