|
|
I'm going to convert my stock washer system to one with an electric pump motor. The problem is that I have no idea which pump to buy.
Of any who have done this procedure, do you remember the brand of pump and where you purchased it--like AutoZone, O'Reilly's, etc.
I realize that many pumps would work, but I'd like to get one that has nozzels that will fit my stock hoses.
Thanks,
Tim |

Tim - I put electric washer motors in for my 1970 sedan and my 1971 Super, using parts from O'Reilly.
Actually, it was called Checker then, was over two decades ago. I use the stock washer bottle, an electric pump, and a momentary toggle switch. So my exact type of washer motor is likely not still available. Those two used different washer bottles and mount locations. _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Hello Tim, You might look into adapting a w/w pump & reservoir system from a 1970 chevy truck,(C-10 through C-20 series types) into the bugs. These are 12v systems and operate on a single hot lead & ground. The main drawback might be that these generally only have a capacity of near 1 quart of washer fluid.. take the gal bottle with you..
IHTH

The Mexican Beetles have an electric pump, the tank fits nicely on the inside of the left front fender. The electric pump is just at the bottom of the tank on the left in this picture. These are still available.

Thanks, guys.
I was looking for something like Cusser bought ... in the olden days .
I plan on using my stock, upright, SB washer bottle, and converting it like Survivor71 did to his. I asked him about his pump but he can't remember the brand.
Maybe I'll just go to O'Reilly's and ask them for a generic and take a look to see what they have.
I really wouldn't care which 12v pump I got, except some have two different sizes for inlet and outlet, and that can cause fitment issues (reducers, etc.); yet, eventually I'm going to have to match the size of the stock spritzer nozzle.
I have some Wolfsburg West washer hose left over from the leaky fiasco of trying to restore my old pressurized system; so I'll take that with me for referrence.

You know, that looks like a good set-up, and it got a lot of good reviews--and it's cheap.
I saw a pump on the same page, however that looks good (fittings and all) for really cheap. It had good reviews, too. I think I'll go for it because I want to use my old water bottle.
Thanks,
Tim |

Unfortunately those ones don't fit a Super because of the strut towers.
Tim, it really doesnt matter too much on the brand, as long as its 12 volt and has 4mm hose barbs it will work fine.
Mine was just a universal one from one of the car parts shops here.
It was from my first bug I bought nearly 20 years ago.

Just a heads up: I installed a Trico 11-100 electric pump last year, and the damn thing has burnt out.
I used it a total of a dozen times, tops.
So you might try another brand, if going to electric.

For what it's worth here's mine Tim. My dad did it so I assume it was just a generic autozone pump. It's wired to an extra stock toggle in the dash by the hazard switch. Yes, that's a Clorox top I drilled a vent hole in. Perfect fit to replace the stock one and surprisingly sturdy.

I like the Clorox lid
I just drilled a hole in my stock lid--the one with the inlet hose attached.
Below shows what I already have:
As you can see, I already have everything on the reservoir/pump side. And I have everything on the electric side: in-line 8 amp fused from number 12 ignition-on (unfused side) to the switch; nice 12 gauge wire to the unit; well grounded.
That damned pump just doesn't work anymore. Since the drought here in California, I have had no reason to use it often. A dozen times, maximum, since I installed the Tri-co pump less than a year ago. There was a 90 day warranty on the pump, but I bought it in April of 2013.
It worked extremely well when it was working, however.
I tested out the electrics and got power to the pump. Then I thought there might be a ground issue, so I wired up the ground to another known ground. That's when I got a puff of smoke from the back of the pump. The pump also got a little warm to the touch--although it didn't blow the inline 8 amp fuse I had dedicated to the arrangement.
I'll try with another pump and see what's up.
Edit: By the way, does anyone know if a flakey ground could cause the pump to burn out? I had just drilled a hole and installed the ground wire on one of the same bolts that hold the pump unit on.
Thanks, everyone.

Thanks, I keep forgetting to steal a new one from the laundry room to sand the top smooth and dip the outer part in my can of black plasti-coat. It should look as little less "hack" after that |

Tim,
On my standard I used a pump out of a mid-90s Jetta, got it for like $5 at a scrapyard. OEM parts are gonna be the toughest, and why not get something with a VW stamp on it! It worked real well for about a year before I got one of the Mexi-beetle washer systems, which mounts in the trunk through an extra long fender bolt. Super easy install, but I dunno if it'll line up with the super trunk. Anyways, I'd try for an NOS or even a used VW pump, will definitely outlive any generic FLAPS pump you buy. _________________ 1971 STD BEETLE- DD-1st car, 1st love. keepin' it stock! 1600DP, Solex 34-3 Mexi Bosch SVDA Dist NOW w/POINTS

Tim and crew...
My Super is a 1972. It originally had the air-pressure washer bottle and the wiper stalk on the steering column had the rubber washer tubes going in and out of it for some kind of pressure switch.
The air-pressure washer system is gone and I have purchased a water bottle with an electric motor in it.
Before I install a push botton in my dash or something, I am wondering if the stock wiper stalk on the Super Beetle has an internal electric switch already. And, if so, I am wondering which prongs leading out of the steering column wiring harness would be used to signal the electric washer pump.
If someone knows it will save me a search for Waldo in the Bentley color-coded wiring diagram pages. Or, if someone knows where Waldo is, approximately, in those Bentley diagram pages that would be helpful too.
Thank you all for your anticipated generosities. _________________ 1966 Sportsmobile Camper https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0

Buggeee, which one did you get? I'm in the market for one and I have a 74 Super, so wondering how your's mounts up? I have a button on the dash for the old pump I had, so I'll just go with that. _________________ scrapyards are for quitters
