I am attempting to re-attach the rear trunk spring rods to the hinge rollers. I can not seem to torque the end enough to attach. Any body know the trick to accomplish this without the loss of a hand? Thanks, Tim Jones, Spokane, WA

I recently replaced both nylon rollers on my 71. I used a 9 or 10MM offset box end wrench as a tool to save my hands, fingers and eyesight from injury. First remove the two deck screens from each side of the engine compartment. This allows direct force to be applied to the spring rod in a downward direction toward the engine deck. If weakness or fear is a problem, add a pipe extension to the box end wrench to add leverage and get your body parts further from the spring. The offset of the wrench provides a perch for the rod and keeps it from springing out. Once force is applied, have your smoking hot girlfriend (SHGF hereinafter) reach around your tortured position to remove the grimy old smushed roller and then to slip a well greased on on to the roller pin. Offer a manicure as payment for her sheared fingernails. Release tension slowly in an upward direction and make sure the rod is firmly centered on the new plastic roller. If your rods are not already set in place and "loaded" you can attach one side of the spring bar with the two nuts and bracket OEM then reload the rod on the other end in a similar manner to get the rod against the two studs in the engine bay then have the SHGF place the bracket, washers and two nuts in place and screw down to fully load the spring. Hope this helps. Always wear eyewear, gloves, pitcher's cup and confirm that the life insurance is paid in full.. Have fun folks.
