|
|
Can anyone identify this electrical connector for me? It is located behind the dash between the radio and the instrument cluster of my 1988 Westfalia (automatic). I just put a new stereo in with a switched power source and am currently using the positive wire from this connector for my stereo.
It is a five pin connector with three wires. They are a Black, a Brown and a Gray/White. (The red wire is my own radio connection.) Now that I am using this source of power, I am wondering if it is OK. I pulled the radio/clock/etc fuse and it did not cut power to this supply. I looked through the Bentley manual and do not see this connector (I am sure I missed it in there somewhere). It is likely something that was either abandoned with the Subaru conversion to my van or it is an accessory that my van does not have.
Any help is appreciated. _________________ 1988 Westfalia automatic Subaru OBD1

You should not use that plug at all. Unplug your stereo from it and leave it alone.

That is part number 171941599. Here is another thread on it. I did get one Vanagon harness that had that connector as well. Indeed, there is google reference to it as a diagnostic flat connector.

That is for connecting the oscillation over thruster. I wouldn't use it, since two wires have been cut; you may materialize inside a mountain.

That would only be an issue if your phase shifter wasn't wired in right.

That connector appears to be documented in my Bentley manual as Terminal T3c on the "main wiring diagram - interior lights" for 1988, 1989 (Page 97.128 in my manual). The wiring which has been cut on your connector was attached to the cigarette lighter and the Radio wiring.
Unfortunately I can't tell you what it was connected to. Maybe it was for some kind of factory radio accessory. _________________ 1988 Westfalia automatic Subaru OBD1

This should be it. 3 pin connector T3 with White/Blue, (2)Brown & (2)Red wire connections. Apparently it was used to control an "Amplified Speaker", if your van came with that option.

oh yeah that is totally it. now i just have to figure out what an "amplified speaker" is... but good to know it's not critical.

Do you have a Carat or Blue/White star? Might be for the "Bass Reflex Speaker" in the panel behind the driver's seat. I guessed it was for an optional powered antenna but good to know what it's really for!
