After owning, fixing & rebuilding many Beetles over the years, I finally purchased a 1969 Fasty. It's been slammed and I'd like to return it to somewhat of a normal ride height.

Someone down the line has cut off the bumpstops to facilitate the lowering. Now that I want to raise it back up again, what is the general opinion of the beam without the bumpstops?

Should I fabricate new bumpstops? Buy a new beam? Do without bumpstops, its no big deal? Fabricate limiting straps at least?

Any alternate opinions/ideas?

Thanks, all!

I'd check out the existing beam before you make a decision. Some are rusted out in the corners where the lower rubber collar goes around the beam. If the beam is neglected-the corners collect wet road debris and will rust out. I've pulled what looked like a nice looking beam off only to find out that the lower corners are rotten.

If your beam is fine (bearings are good, no rust, solid, etc.) then I suggest welding on bump stops.

OR

If you have access to a good replacement beam, I'd swap it out.

I'm in the same boat; mine were cut off when the PO lowered it. I'm just running with out them, and I don't seem to be having any issues.

Oh, I definitely agree on checking it out. Also, depending on whether or not they capped off the "former" bump stops, you might have water entering those spots, and diluting the grease in the lower beam tube. If they're still open, I'd close them off and run it (grease it again before doing so). If it's rusty though, I'd swap it out.

On my Notch, the brackets are still there, but the rubbers are gone (got removed in the 2000), and I haven't had an issue with them being gone (the front is down 2 inner splines).

Cap them off and load the crap out of the beam with grease.

What is the best way to cap off the hole where the bump stops used to be?
