PostPosted: Sat Nov 22, 2014 8:11 pm    Post subject: New Owner- two questions. Reply with quote

I am a new Ghia owner- I have a 69 Coupe and the previous owners made some modifications and I have a couple questions:

1. can someone identify the vertical yellow tube in the first image?

2. am I missing half a spring on each side of my deck lid spring? Maybe that's why it won't stay open?

Thanks for the help!
Jim

I looked at a picture of the same area in my 70 vert and it doesn't have a tube like that.

Yeah you're missing springs, I don't think I have that tube either

The top pick I think is the dog leg up to the defroster from the heater channel. And yes you are missing half of the hood springs. When putting dual carbs on a ghia the air cleaner often contacts the hood springs.

How difficult is it to install new springs inside the rear decklid?

Do other folks hide the "dog legs" for the defroster? or why are mine showing...thanks for all the help!

Mentioned above. the other spring might not clear the air filter on the dual carbs.

As for the difficulty of putting the other ones in, I'm not sure. Probably not the hardest thing in the world to do.

You can get a shorter filter to fit the filter housing you have, which would allow the use of the springs without modification.

The yellow tube is for moving the hot air up to the dash defrosters. Usually hidden behind carpet et cetera.
Full springs wont fit with those air filters. Many guys with duals hold the lid up with a stick or rod or struts.

I just looked at mine, I don't have a tube, instead I have hoses. Am I supposed to have tubes like that?

My 59 came with tubes. My 71 came with the hose. I don't know what year it changed.

Those are for the defrost. They are on my '68 coupe. I installed the new carpet over the tubes to cover them.

I have a 69 Coupe and have the same tube. It should be covered by a board which also holds the floor air vent lever. The carpet is glued on top of the board. On the springs, there should be a thread which would cover the removal and installation.

Thanks to all who responded- I'll work on changing out my tall air filters to shorter ones and then re-covering my tubes- they are ugly.

Thanks again,
Jim

Here is a series of photos that detail the kick panel. if you have parts missing , you can try finding something from a post '66 model right up to your model year.

The channel has a folded edge that catches the carpet edge. Observe the four screws that hold it, the board and the windlace in place.

In the picture below, look closely at the front edge of the board where I've labeled it "Channel". It not actually the channel but the shadow left by the channel on the board. You can see the screw holes through the cardboard.

So the stacking order is 1:cardboard 2:windlace 3:channel and 4:carpet.

The carpet is glued in place.

This last picture shows the back of my car during restoration. Clearly visible are the springs for the rear decklid.

You correctly conclude your car has those chopped in half.

Hey those are very helpful images – thank you very much. I'll start ripping into that stuff today and get it re-positioned perfectly.
