Today i was driving on the highway, looked in the rear view mirror and saw a trail of white smoke about as big as my rabbit itself. I pulled off the highway, coasted down the off ramp to see if it was just an over heat issue. when i tried to start it up again at the stop sign, it sounded extremely flooded. So i am lead to believe oil is getting into one of my cylinders, but dont know a lot about may car. I will need to tackle this head on and was asking for advice of things i will have to do and check. I have have wrenches, sockets and screwdrivers. lol. thanks for the interest in advance.

Start with a compression test. Check the condition of the oil and coolant.
Ps, what is the motor?

If it was oil, the engine would not shut off with the key, as the engine would keep running on it. I'm thinking it was coolant.

Blown head gasket.easy to replace .make sure you get the right thickness.there is a tab on it that has sone notches in it. Make sure the new one has the same number of notches.I have done three of them.took me about 4 hours each.

Trust me. Head gasket. On the VW diesel when the gasket blows the coolant goes into the combustion chambers and is burned creating the white smoke.Unlike other motors the coolant does not end up in the oil pan .it will run but overheat and warp the head.replace the gasket before it does.like I posted before it is an easy job.Make sure you properly index the timing belt when you bolt everything back together.

White smoke = coolant = head gasket

Blue smoke = oil seeping past piston rings

CAUTION ! If the head gasket has blown just don't replace the gasket . Have the head wet milled or you will blow another gasket eventually .

VW recommends against milling but most eveybody does it if the head is not too warped . If it's really bad get a new/rebuilt head .
