Okay, I split the case.
I might as well balance and blueprint the thing and do it right. |
I think you made the right decision. That's a great bug ya got there and you'll certainly add value to your bug by rebuilding the engine. The other thing is you'll know your engine is solid and will be reliable for you.
I rebuilt both my engines in my two bugs. The last one I did, I had the machine work done and had everything balanced including the pressure plate. I'm so glad I spent the $ on the balancing because it does make a big difference. It runs so smooth even though I didn't install a counter balanced crank.
I like to know I can jump into my VW's and drive across the country if I needed to w/out worrying about a catastrophic failure. I recently drove my 67 bug into the mountains to enjoy the fall colors. It was a long drive up a pretty good grade. I ended up putting close to 350 miles on the bug that day and the bug drove flawlessly. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Agreed, Bill. So I this morning Gary from RIMCO called. Very nice guy and it mustve been like 6:30 am his time when he called! Awesome.
I spent the better part of this morning packing the crankshaft AFTER removing the rods. Rod bearings looked worn but okay. I'm rather proud of my packing job on the crank. I'll have to take some pics. I used a starter box from AutoZone, cut some wood pieces that just fit in the ends of the box. Then used two different hole saws the sizes of each end of the crank. So its cradled on each end by the wood. Stuffed foam all around it and its in there. I also packaged the connecting rods in a separate box.
My wife brought a 20"x16" pallet home that she found (what a wife!) and that fits in the bottom of a 20"x20"x20" box. The case will be strapped to the pallet and the crank and rod boxes will fit in there too! Woo hoo!
Gonna ship it all to RIMCO on Friday. Also Friday I'll be receiving from Wolfsburg West:
Pistons/jugs
Lifters/pushrods
Gasket set
Push rod tubes
new engine tin screws
front main seal
generator gasket set
Should receive my reconditioned heads next week some time from Matt Kenney via Aircooled Research. I'll also be getting the Thermostat ring from thecamberkid in Oregon and ignition cable tube clamps from Jens in Germany. _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

Matt at Aircooled Research is the best, highly recommend you buy parts from him. He's a whiz at 36 hp engines, I recommend his cams as well.
RIMCO did my case work as well. I had them do a few extras, machine in sand seal, bronze lifter sleeves, case savers, and machine the cylinder decks to match. Price tag damn near killed me, but it was worth it.
Pics
Good luck with your build, just a tip, 36hp connecting rods can be a pain to torque properly...take your time |

I had the case soda (baking soda) blasted
The crank work (counter weights/8 doweled) was done by DPR. They also balanced the assembly including the flywheel and pressure plate.
For the turning of the journals, counter weights, 12lb flywheel, clutch & pressure plate, balancing, and shipping back was around $450
DPR is a great shop as well
If you talk to Matt again, ask him for tips on the rods, they do not self align like the late model rods... |

Got a call from Gary at RIMCO last Thursday. They're just wrapping up the 36HP case, crank and rods. Should be shipping it this way on Monday...tomorrow.
I've been passing the time waiting by working on a 1964 beetle that I call The Diamond. The '70 beetle is down for brakes. The master cylinder blew out. Not cool! |
Welcome to multiple, classic VW ownership! It seems like you always are tweaking, fixing, improving something on one of them! _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

I ordered the original material for the seats from Germany and received it yesterday. Let the flow of cash begin!
So, that'll get tucked away for now and I'll get the seats pulled and start blasting the frames and fixing any issues with them. I'll be ordering the coconut fiber, and jute material as well as picking up some burlap for the seat padding. I'm told there is an upholsterer in the county here who is VW savvy and who has done many show cars over the years.
Once she has the seat frames and material, I'll separate body from pan and finish up the body repairs. Once I'm satisfied with repairs I'll send the body out for paint. There's a shop in Macon that does very good work on older cars.
It will be pan time while that's going on. But I need to fabricate a couple of dollies in the meantime. More to follow... _________________ My father's 1970 Beetle-

Alright, since this is a ground up restoration, I need to get the body off the pan. I was looking for ideas for a body dolly and found a likely candidate in the form of 66kaferresto.wordpress.com
I'm going to use his pictures because I didn't take any during the build. I'll post a picture of mine at the end.
Materials-
Harbor freight-
4- 5" casters
Lowe's shopping list
4- 8' x4x4
1- 6' x 4x4
16- L shaped brackets (Simpson strong tie RTA2Z)
8- flat metal plates
1- 48" long 1" dowel
1- box 1.25" wood screws
16- 3/8" X 2" lag bolts
I cut one 24" pieces off the ends of two the 8' posts and took the 6' piece and cut two 24" pieces from that. That left me with two 8', two 6' and four 24" 4x4's.
The wood dowel got cut into 3.5" pieces, eight of them.
