Just dropped off my fan shroud at the local powdercoat shop here in town.. The owner has a '63 ragtop he's working on, should have asked to see pics of it!
I soaked all of my tin in Tide and hot water.. bad move. The paint started sheeting off and bubbling up on the fan shroud all over. No way to get fresh epoxy sprayed inside everywhere, and we all hate rust, so the powdercoat was a no-brainer. I'll post pics when it's finished, of course.
Got my 36mm fan in the mail.. been getting a ton of parts here on the classifieds. Some really great guys here supporting the community that way. Picked up some L&R heater box sled tin locally, along with a set of 88mm slip-ins.. I traded for everything, and I'm still debating on running the slip-ins or not. Last piece I got was a hoover bit from our awesome powdercoater here.. It's amazing how much stuff gets removed from our engines along the way! _________________ Robert in Memphis

Here's what I've done so far (pic heavy):
^ Semi-gloss black on the shroud, and anthracite/clear on the alternator case & all three parts of the fan backing plate.
^This is after collecting some extra pieces of tin and sandblasting everything
^Back from the powdercoat shop. He gave me a great deal on my already-sandblasted tins!
^Mocked up to start checking some fitment - should have done that first!
^From the right
^Just found this breastplate at our local junkyard! Could NOT believe another bug showed up after I'd been searching almost all year.
I'm still hunting for a good thermostat flaps setup, the rear cylinder deflectors, and an oil breather. VW tin is the way to go! _________________ Robert in Memphis

Mines a 69 but I'm pretty sure original (with exception of some lines and hoses). I'm pretty sure some of the grime might date back to 69. It still has white chalk marks on some of the tin that I'm pretty sure were from the factory. |

Hey would you mind posting a photo up closer to the areas I circled? I'm trying to figure out what screws into the nutplates on the cylinder tin, and what that hose on the altitude compensator is going to.

Just a follow up on this engine - I ran it for a few months but it leaked oil, badly, and had a ton of end play. I finally pulled it out, tore it down, and found it needed a line bore and thrust cut. After about two months working on it I finally found a bus id been wanting all along, with a "good" engine in it, so I let my super-rusty bug go and put this engine project away for a possible rainy day build.
Hopefully, I'll have a better case to start with when I get to my next engine build. _________________ Robert in Memphis
