My buggy has a 1600 dual port and came with solex 30/21 on it
It barely ran, I cleaned up the carb and got it to run... just ok
Then I put an empi 34 on it and it ran stronger but had all kinds of weird inconsistent prolems
Now I bought a used german solex on ebay and a rebuild kit. I soaked the thing in carb cleaner and rebuilt it real nice but when I went to put it on the mounting surface is warped and one of the mounting studs pulled right out. I guess I got taken on that one
I just soaked the original solex 30/31 and rebuilt it. I put it on and it's lacking in power and I can't get it to idle slower no matter how far I turn the large idle screw in. it idles high until I close it all the way, then it dies
there was a screw blocking the hole in the throttle plate and I took it out, maybe that has something to do with it
It has an svda distributor that appears to work right and the timing is right on
Now I'm thinking a single weber progressive but i don't know if that's gonna help or not or what size/model
I'm growing weary of this thing |

anyway...
I think I may have had the two exterior jets on the solex 30 swapped
I checked them both and thought they had the same numbers but when I swapped them this morning it runs good
Also my throttle wasn't closing all the way and I added am additional throttle spring
Now with it closing all the way I see my adjustment was off on the throttle plate
Anyway it's running but not as strong as with the 34 Pict 3 |

A couple ideas that might help.
-Check for air leaks at all the joints. So spray some starter fluid at the manifold where the rubber boots are and around the heads where the manifolds connect and also around the throttle shaft as that will sometimes leak as well.
I have the same problem of not being able to turn the bypass screw in enough to bring idle below 1100 because I have a leak at the throttle shaft but I can't fix that (that I know of) so I have a Weber carb on the way
-Also you might want to try getting some new jets that will change the mixture for the elevation you are at. On my 34-pict 3 (bocar model) I got a new idle jet (the one on the gen/alternator side) and that helped me a lot. My old one kept getting clogged and was worn out I guess.
-And make sure you are getting good pre-heat!! Take the intake off and run some thin cable (like throttle cable or bike brake cable) through the heat risers and make sure they aren't blocked off.
Best of luck and let us know when you get it running good. |

You can repair the stud and carefully flatten the flange by hand with a bastard file _________________ 1965 Type 1 sunroof Baja / about 70k miles on self-rebuilt '74 1600 and counting / SP heads and aftermarket valve keepers / non-doghouse shroud with external cooler and filter / 1.5 qt extended sump / Weber 32/36 DFAV progressive carb / 009 dist with Pertronix / 1.25 ratio rockers and ball adjusters / 1.5" stainless steel J-pipes and carbon steel baja exhaust |

Today I got a stud with a nut on top to fit on the flange, I welded the nut on the flange because it kept pulling out
I'm going to try to flatten the surface like you said, thanks |
