|
|
So I have a NOS rear apron coming in and I am trying to take off the old apron. I have drilled out the spot welds along the sides. I can see underneath where the apron attaches to the air box sheetmetal but I do not see and spot welds. The new apron will have the lock carrier. Can someone tell me where and what to cut next to get the apron off? I am trying to salvage the apron as well so hacking it up is not an option.

This is clatters new NOS fastback apron
Study the apron on the car. Going form my own experience, you may be able to separate the apron from the section that houses the oil filler area. Also, take a look under the car as the lower air duct portion may be either spot welded or seam welded. I can't speak for a Notch but my square had the lower duct portion seam welded from one side to the next. This came from the factory. Study what you have going on and I hope the info helps. Good luck.
You can see how I approached removing my apron in my 67 thread, page 37. If I could so it again, I would as it's a pain to deal with. Just take your time, be patient and plan your removal. _________________ MonT3

You should have cut on/sacrificed the old apron with grinder/sawzall, rather than screw up the inner fenders. You can still grind/weld it all back together & the welds won't show! _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

The Notchback apron (to the left) is one-piece including the lock portion, it only has a strip for the seal welded to it. The other two are two-piece joined where the seal goes. |

You have a billion more spot welds to go. There are more spot welds on the two lips that are on the smaller piece where the oil filler and latch are. Depending on how much of the apron you want to remove, you will have to drill out those spot welds. Also, there are a bunch of hard to get to spot welds that are behind the apron where the engine air intake attaches to. It'll be difficult to remove that apron without damaging it somewhat. I drilled out all of the spot welds and also cut a small portion of the apron to remove it. Good Luck. _________________ 68 Fastback Build: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?p=5396323#5396323 |

Inner fender wells are getting replace too, I made some progress. Need to get another spot weld cutter since mine is getting dull. So it appears the last series of spot welds are behind the apron? That is not going to be fun.

I ended up cutting mine in 2 pieces to make replacing it easier. Here's a pic with it removed.
If you look real close, you'll see the inner lip that the apron spot welds to.
Page A28 1 thru 5 of the Big Blue Bentley cover replacing the rear apron, including where it gets spot welded. You're probably going to have to remove the paint in that middle body line, so you can see where the spot welds are, so you can drill them out. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I'm confused in why you're replacing it in the first place? because of the bottom is a little tweaked? i would keep the NOS in case of a real deal accident.
just my 2 cents.
some lady sadly did a number on me, (hit and run) looking for a decent apron. any leeds? |

Not sure who has one but last year I know of one that sold for $850, just be ready to pay when you find one. _________________ '68 Lotus White T34 automatic sunroof
