I strapped them in pretty well and didn't have any problems. You should definitely get a pinball machin! They're a lot of fun to have. We've had some awesome partys at my buddy's place when he had a dozen of them. _________________ No matter how I struggle and strive

Took my van out for a weekend boy Scout service project. Spent 2 nights snug as a bug. Everyone else was in tents, if it's flat and I can get my van in that's where I am staying. I've done my time on the ground. If I must stay out of my van than I use my cot. Sleeping on the ground is my last resort .

Abe took me to my hunting area, where I bagged a buck an hour after sunrise.
A guy helped me drag it the mile back to the van (Praise the Lord.)
"You don't see too many Westy's out hunting," he says.
"Nope," say I. _________________ Abe: 1987 Syncro Full Camper, TiiCo engine conversion, A3 pulley kit |

Congrats on a successful hunt! I've been trying to get mine set up for that, but am not sure about bringing back game, which when lucky is big, like an elk! How did you bring it back home? _________________ 1990 Syncro 16" DoppleKabine 2.1 DJ 112i

Thanks...it was a big relief to Mrs. C. Last year I was out four days with no luck.
This year I shot a young whitetail. I decided to field dress it so I just wrapped it up well in a new tarp and (with my new friend's help) slid it up on to the folded down bed.
Last year I got a big muley which I quartered out in the field and packed back to the van with the legs and backstraps sealed in trash compacter bags. That fit no problem.
With an elk I would either quarter it out or cut it in half and put half on the bed and half on the floor. If the latter I imagine the lower legs would have to come off, as well as the head. _________________ Abe: 1987 Syncro Full Camper, TiiCo engine conversion, A3 pulley kit |

That makes sense ~ have to make sure you wrap/seal everything up tight! I don't have a syncro, so am planning to get a small trailer for my ATV that also has extra room for game hauling. That should be a good combo to be able to camp Westy-style but also access harder terrain. We don't need no stinkin' wall tent! _________________ 1990 Syncro 16" DoppleKabine 2.1 DJ 112i

Okay it's been a year or so since the restoration has been completed..right. Well, the engine was rebuilt, we added Boge shocks the right D rated tires recently and everything checked out driving around town, everything else that I couldn't fix fixed by my good friend and mechanic, Toby at Import Restoration and Automotive in Smyrna, GA. A fresh tuneup and oil change and were ready to go. Now, my old urge to drive old cars down an old road was soon to be realized..I thought.
Who knew the south end of the Blue Ridge Parkway would be closed? Not me.. So, on to a lovely little Panther Creek State Park on Lake Holston in TN. Lunch in Rogersville, TN and a historic 1824 inn, tavern and diner where presidents Jackson, Polk and Johnson (Andrew) once slept. We only ate lunch in a great old piece of history...just like our Vanagon..sort of.
We enjoyed a walk at the park on a sunny, 58* day and spectacular sunset on our way to Blacksburg, VA to wakeup to snow the day before Thanksgiving Day...from inside a warm house. The PROPEX performed perfectly the night we camped when the cold air began to move in ahead of the snow.
I Had to show Vanny where all her other friends that don't have good homes like she does end up..she said she felt sad then wanted it all to become like the rescue scene in Finding Nemo. She wanted to shout out to all the other Vanagons trapped inside chain link net, "Swim..swim..keep on swimming..er, uh START, START ...KEEP ON STARTING" and then see hundreds all suddenly spring to life with one great blue cloud covered sound of VU VU VA- VAN VAN-A-GONNNNN filling the mountain hollows and all of them leap out of their 5 acres of captivity and drive themselves away in every directions at once..all soon to find a good homes, campers finding families, syncros full of outdoors gear, granny gear climbing steep roads once again and tintops going back to working stiffs with good dogs inside them...all like it should be...but alas, there they are, lonely, but safe for now.
After another restful day and a thankful group was together again with dear family friends and Vanny was ready to get back on the road. It wasn't the happy 35 in 3rd gear that the Parkway promised but I26 across Unicoj ridge, with the 5000ft Hughes Ridge and Mt . Mitchell visible off to our left on the way down toward Ashville was close enough...this time.
The only mechanical issue was early on. The power, even with a fresh 2L air cooled engine is a lesson in conservative driving skills I think all those who seek to pass a driving test should master. She was loosing all response to the gas pedal when we rolled off to the side next to a quiet pasture somewhere north of Blue Ridge,GA. More that one person stopped to help..one young man just wanted to check out the "hippy van"... A pleasant sunny and safe place to rearrange the kit-and-kaboodle and open the engine lid. I checked all the important connections, removed and reconnected the plug wires when I noticed several cracks in the L-shaped rubber boot between the air meter and the throttle body...I think my terms are correct. Air could easily be sucked in, I reasoned and upset the ECU to no end. So, I applied a little Plumbers Goop to "restore" this part when I found the clamp to be loose enough to spin around by itself..could have been the reason for the troublesome idle I have been wondering about...now, my wife thinks I'm a real mechanic, too. Shhhhh.
Down to East Flat Rock, NC and Grand kids playing inside the Vanny and nothing broken...
And a hug from one of my sons, this one an Iraq Veteran still serving active NG
Doesn't get better for me...unless the doggone Parkway had been open..I guess. |

Our newest van took me up for a test drive/camp/ski afternoon in the Mountains. Great day at Mary Jane. Got in early, set up breakfast cooking, put on ski gear and hit the hill.
Came back and there was a friend behind me. We chatted for a while and the man and his wife who owned the Westy were awesome folks (Sara and Alex, i think). I plan on running into them more this season.
After riding, I made my way to a nearby pup for some apre ski drinks and apps before heading out during sunset up Vasquez Creek Road. Just past the residential neighborhoods there is national forest land and the rangers have been kind enough to plow out some room on the sides of the roads that are 20 feet away from the road -- therefore you can camp up there no problemo (that was also confirmed by the cutie Australian Forest Ranger who said I could have camped next to the Ranger Station if I wanted.) I opted for the road (I wanted to be far enough from the ranger station that I could get out the 12 gauge slugs and do some target shooting)
Dinner and a movie, and I was out like a light. Van cooked it between 61 and 65 all night long.
Got up at 6, van got me to the Frasier Valley rec center for some laps in the pool (and, I can't lie, checking out european ski team hotties), then back to Mary Jane for a half-dozen runs before heading back to the front range.
I'm now perfectly confident letting the van out for rental/hire. If any of you folks are headed to Colorado and want to do some VW'ing out here, give us a shout (we'll have two refurbished vanagons by the spring as well). _________________ -------

It's sitting in the garage since Nov. 1. It's acting as storage for misc camping gear while I get my truck and camper ready for Baja. |

Yeah, I did that once too and swore I'd never to do it again...
Now I hate that they actually fit because I'll always know I could do it again if I needed to... _________________ 84' Wolfsburg Westy GL 1.9 Manual |
