Hello everyone new to site I've enjoyed reading for while have odd problem I can't figure out!!!! I've got an early 60's bug that was converted into a busn buggy I've used for moose hunting for last 30 years an original side by side if you will.... I love it and was so impressed with vehicles toughness easy of repair ten years ago I found and rebuilt a manx for the street!!!!! back to question...the engine is a 1600 single port I sporatically get a cylinder that won't fire but if you unhook spark plug wire and hold it close enough toplug it willarc and run...put the wire back on and it quits!!!!!! I've changed plugs wires coil cap rotor coil etc. can't figure it out not alwys same cylinder ,usually 3 or 4 sometimes 2 any help would be great....thanks |

You didn't mention replacing the points and checking for shaft wear? |

Are they stock plug connectors? The Bakelite red color? If so they have 1,000 ohm resister in them. Check continuity and also look at end to see if it cracked. _________________ Joseph

maybe there is an internal break that connects when you fiddle with it? |

Sounds like a grounding issue to me, if you have swapped all components as you have and the issue remains and floats from cylinder to cylinder i would look at the path to ground. When you arc to the plug it is forcing the spark through the plug but when it has a good connection it sounds like it is arcing out some how. I have no idea how it's possible but sure sounds like a ground problem. |

Should just ground through the block, meaning something may not be bolted tight or corrosion. Just a guess, but take an ohm meter and check resistance from the heads plug threads and the negative battery post or something with a know good ground to the negative post. Should be 0 ohms or very close to it, if notthat would sshow a problem somewhere. |

Take a windex bottle full of water, wait until dark, start it up, spray the spark plug wire with a fine mist the entire length. it sounds like spark leak, and that will make it visible, or it will pull one more possible cause off the table. _________________ He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one.
