My check engine light came on our "04" Corolla and the dealer wants $120 just to reader the code! You have to buy the hardware to transmit to an Android phone, but it's pretty cheap

Or go to your local FLAPS and have them read the code for free...

I have to admit I did not know what FLAPS meant! I tried an online search!
Not helpful! The Samba dictionary set me straight! Embarassed
I never knew the parts store would do that.
further embarrassment----I never knew what MILF meant either, but found out fast searching for that one Laughing

You would be surprised what the big chain auto parts stores will do if you ask.

Don't go to the stealership.

I use a Bluetooth obdc transmitter (cheap Chinese ones) and the torque app on my droid (Samsung s3) for both my wife's highlander and my Tacoma. Both of the transmitters (I got one per vehicle) worked fine for me and work fine with the app. Mine look different than the pic you posted. I have no complaints. I rarely fiddle with it but the app seems to work fine and gives trouble code info and real time stuff too and you can clear them.

You can get the code read at a lot of places for free. But the torque app and Bluetooth reader is a working solution too and nice to have on hand. I'd get the code read somewhere and also get the odbc transmitter ordered and set that up with the torque app also.

I use a bluetooth adapter similar to the one pictured ($8 on ebay). It has worked well on the few vehicles I have used it on.. Chevy Avalanche, Honda Accord, Nissan Maxima.

I'm using the Torque lite (free) app on my samsung phone. Works great!

One cool thing I like, it is small enough to fit in your pocket. So if you're looking at buying a car or going to an auction, you can bring it along to read fault codes.

It will also show most of the info that shows up on your gauge cluster. Very handy for diagnosing gauge problems (common in GM trucks)

I've used Torque for a few years, best part is I only paid for the app once, everytime I upgrade my phone the app carries over from the Play Store. I tried one of the cheap OBDII transmitters at first but it worked like shit. I spent the money on the Kiwi Adapter from Amazon and it's worked perfectly on every vehicle I've tired it on. I'd rather be able to scan and clear codes right in my driveway than have to drive to AutoZone or Advance Auto everytime I need a code read. Plus if someone I work with or a friend needs a code read I can do that anywhere. I highly recommend both the app and the Kiwi adapter. It's the only app I've ever paid for but it was worth every penny, I think it was like $7 when I bought it or something along those lines.

I always thought Torque was when you have morning wood and you have to pee soooo bad that when you push your manhood down to pee it picks your heels up off the ground? Laughing

Actually if your car is equipped with OBD II or OBD III you can read the codes directly off the dash board with a SIMPLE sequence of turning the key. You don't need any other device or program to get the code.

Heh, I read the flash codes on my '94 F150
Nice that it was an option, but having to read multiple codes in a row (had a bad ground then lost a few sensors immediately after) isn't all that much fun. Got the hang of it now, but eh.

I guess some of the newer cars could display the code in their display (?) but none of mine are that fancy, just flashes the check engine light and you write down the sequence to figure out the code.

Torque ($5) + OBD2 reader ($25) + an old andriod phone is so worth $30 (old andriod phones are rather plentiful, most are just tossed out); wish it worked on the '94, two years too old.
It also reads pending codes (no check engine light yet), which was helpful when diagnosing a mouse-induced fuel tank vapor leak on my '04 Ford.
Allowed me to clear the code then fairly quickly check to see if I'd found all the damage.

Newest cars with CANbus may not send correct code information to an OBD-only reader.

For years I have used a ScanGauge which works fine on my Prius and Infiniti, but won't work on the new Benz; it gets codes but they are actually gibberish. I didn't expect that.

Haven't used the app but the best tool I've ever bought was a code reader.

Then hit the introweb for info and find ways to fix it.

More than likely won't work with OBD1, OBD2 started in 1996 and most of the phone apps are designed to work with only OBD2 readers.

There's various dedicated OBD1 readers out there, thinking about getting this one for my '94 F150 - (link)

You should be able to use a jumper on the OBD1 connector and read the check engine codes on the dash, it'll flash and you get to decipher that into the correct code.

I called 5 places and not one said they would do it. Only " ignition points ??" O'Reillys said they did it, but now they sell the readers, and stopped. What pisses me off, is the dealer wants $120 to read the code, but does not apply that $$ to the repair if you decide to let them handle it.
