I need to dismantle a pair of sliding windows. I understand that the aluminum frame is held together with silicone adhesive. Does anyone have any tips for removing the silicone or whatever it is? The sliders are camper versions in case it matters.
I'm planning to powder coat the frames black.

Your local hardware store will have silicon remover fluid that functions like paint remover. i recall there is a thread that demonstrates how to pull the unglued frame apart.
i pulled one of my sliders apart and never used it. _________________ VW LT40 build. Like a Vanagon but 30% larger in every direction and 40% slower even in metric.

Do you know that you do not have to "dismantle" the window frame to get the sliding window out? You just flex the frame open to get the slider out.

When I did my camper sliding windows the, rubber seal and rubber bumper, was hard to get. The fuzz seal you can get at Ace Hardware.
And yes I did want to black out my camper sliding window too. Ran out of time for the painter. _________________

Saying that specs are different than dimensions doesn't make sense. Porsche specs/VW specs/engineering specs are nothing but a series of dimensions, sizes, percentages, measurements, etc. |

But if you do want to dismantle the window, here is a description with photos.

I have both window assemblies completely dismantled. That was a fun little project. I found a spay bottle of unknown chemicals that stated to disolve silicone. It seemed to work well.
My plan was to powder coat all the aluminum parts. I'm having second thoughts and may send the parts off to Apex to be black anodized. The fixed piece of glass is such a tight fit that I'm afraid that the thickness of the coating will make reassembly difficult. _________________ Patrick Brown
