I would use 10w-30 if the engine is tight enough to build proper pressure.
I use Brad Penn 10W-30. You want oil with some zinc and ZDDP. Check out this thread. The mods will probably ask you to use it to avoid having tons of oil threads. lol

the more I read the more confused I get, i have to use 10w-30 and add additives if I cant find Brad Penn brand. I really like Rotella I use on my F250, i see a few people saying the Rotella 15w-40 is good? I don't like adding additives, would like an oil that is fine by itself. I did notice a little oil around gaskets( is this oil threads?), so probably got thick stuff in their now. |

Problem using oil designed for your truck is that the VW is a flat tappet cam where the truck is not. Flat tappet has some unique requirements in that the current oil offered from most major suppliers does not have enough zinc content to protect this unique valve train. Increased zinc content can help avoid major problems like cams going flat. So, either use an oil designed for a flat tappet engine, use additives to increase zinc content or risk flushing a perfectly good valvetrain down the tubes. |

Use standard oils commercially available in weights recommended for temperature ranges recommended in VW manual...
Lots of people have lots of theories, but I just use standard 30wt Valvolene (brand is probably not important) for all around driving winter and summer and its fine....I use this because it is easier to buy locally in 30 wt as the two local store usually only stock multigrades anymore....
Here is 175 pages of BS to drive you crazy on oil types best oils to use....

In reality it probably makes little difference what additives are in oil...

There are plenty of oils with zinc, but you'll have to do a lot of reading to find out which ones are best. The what oil to use thread is a hard read, but there is lots of input and links to other info sources as well. You don't have to use brad penn, thats just what I have decided to run. I get it at a local performance parts shop for $6 a quart or so. I would avoid adding additives if possible. To much of something can be bad also. _________________ Ms Hoover, I glued my head to my shoulder.

the local Oriellys carry's Valvoline VR1 10w-30, $6.87 a quart. I read this engine takes 2.65 quarts, i have an inline oil filter and about 4' of hose going to it. you guys think 3 quarts will be enough. Allready got to go there for the Rag joint that just came in. |

I find most boats end up sitting in yards and get filled up with water........ It depends on your interests and priorities.... Its only a decision you can make...

I would not Trade For a Boat. Boats around Michigan at least are much more plentiful and cheaper to grab, leaving loads of people wanting to trade it for something easier to sell. |
