At first glance it seems hard to believe but after reading some info on this the wrong toe setting, even a few degrees, increases the rolling resistance of the wheel and jacks the suspension in reverse in this case. Live and learn. |
Yep.
Having a little toe OUT is necessary for the rear suspension as the large rubber cuffs at the torsion bars ends get compressed slightly when the car is under power, so a little initial toe out means the rear wheels then track straight under power (the spring plates push forward a mm or two). But too much toe out and as John at Aircooled says, in reverse it encourages wheel tuck which lifts the car, and too much toe out also increases tyre wear.
When I first bought my bug 43 years ago I chisel-marked the spring plates and brake/wheel hubs so I could realign the rear wheels after working on the rear suspension. So I've never had to take the car to a dealer for a rear wheel alignment. So once you have found the ideal position, it's a great idea to mark the spring plates so you can line it up again easy in future. _________________ Rob

Yes, outside the USA the 1970 manual bug still had the 1500 engine, no flow-through ventilation, swing axles, and OEM front disc brakes.

don't know about australia, but a 1970 base model (sparkafer) in europe would have had a 1200 engine and no discs. _________________ cars:

In most of Europe, 1968-1970 had a choice of 1200 with drum brakes (still 6v), 1300 with drum brakes, or 1500 with OEM front discs.
Here in Aus, we got the 1300s with drum brakes and the 1500s with discs (still swing axles for both), but no 1200s after 1966.
My comment above was directed mainly at USA folks, who's bugs had the IRS suspension in manual cars from 69 onwards and had the first 1600 B series engines in 1970 (but their bugs never saw OEM front discs). The 1600 B series engines were only fitted to buses/kombis in other countries (68-70). _________________ Rob

ok, bit of a misunderstanding: my point was, a car with che crescent stamping behind the rear windows but without the actual vents is likely a post 1970 (1971 model -->) standard 1200. or a (rare) US market poverty spec 110 model, but that would have a MPH speedo and IIRC came around much later in the seventies.
or, it can be a re-panned late mexi beetle. they deleted the vents but kept the stampings.
edit: of course assuming it's not a otherwise repaired/modified vehicle. _________________ cars:

I bet this is what the OP has. A '69 would not have those stampings in any country.

Nothing wrong with a Mexican Beetle [not a "repop"], considering millions of them were used as taxi cabs and lasted for decades, I'd say they are as good as the German Beetles.
Why don't you post a few pics of the car, it woudl help clear things up quickly.

that's for sure a car that has been worked on. body looks mexican (big side-front windows, small rear window, crescent pressings, vented decklid...), but can't really tell if it's a real mexi or just a car that ended up looking like one due to extensive body repairs. _________________ cars:

im confident now its a mexi.
swing axle rear
kilo speedo
fuse box has twelve ports instead of ten like a 69.
almost everything looks factory
i know its been to the body shop a few times. theres at least four different colors under that red
i think she'll last me though. she just sits a little lop sided and the rear raising issue. otherwise she just needs some tlc.
anyone know how i can figure out how the front was lowered
its a ball joint front end, and i cant tell if its dropped spindles or adjustable beam... never had one lowered so i just dont have a clue. |

oh and i wanted to throw this in. my headlight switch went out and i had to replace, well the guy at the vw shop convinced me to get an aftermarket one that was cheaper, even though i wanted to pay more for the correct one.
so it went in and worked just fine. well last night im driving home in the rain and turn on my wipers. the arm totally fowls on the light switsh and shorted out and blew fuses. so i had to pull over take out my stereo and pull out the switch, which is now just hanging through the stereo hole. so i suggest not getting anything other than oe or an exact replacement when it comes to switches and such |
