My front lower hood mechanism is broken and needs to be replaced. Can someone tell me where to find rivets that look similar to the original ones?
Thanks |

The 181 and type 3 share hood latching mechanisms, I believe the part you are talking about is 311-823-509D and can be sourced cheaply.
If I'm way off here post up a pic. |

I went to Ace and Home Depot and was unable to find rivets that look like the original ones. The ones I found seemed flatter, but I did find some stainless steel screws that I think will look good... I just hate that the PO screwed this latch up.
Since I'm on the topic, can anyone tell me why the latch has a 411 part number? I just thought it was strange. |

Stainless Steel screws may tend to work loose with time and fall out and thus may not be the best choice. Pop rivets are better as even if they work loose with time they will give lots of warning before they totally fail. West Marine or Jamestown Distributors will have SS pop rivets.
A 411 part number would indicate that the part was originally destined to be used on a Type 4 vehicle and then later used on a Thing. |

I have found type 3, 4 and rabbit part # on the upper latch. If you use bolts put locking nuts on. So you want the rivets to look original but bolts are OK? The parts microfiche has 6mm X 10mm long bolts listed as replacement for the rivets with nuts and wavey washers. |

I just figured bolts would work until I would be able to find rivets.
Also, I did also put locking nuts on the bolts, thanks for the suggestion.
Thanks everyone for the help!!

heck yeah! Those s/steel Allen button head machine screws sure come in handy! If you had to open the hole up at all for them to fit the original rivets may not work again? Id just leave it with the screws in it... Looks good. _________________ Change is Opportunity!
