OK so far this speedo I bought 12-64 is CORRECT for my 1-65 T34
because is only 1 month away
and would be correct ONLY for T34
white needle with gold center
from Nov 64 to Jun 65
WOW this is ONLY 6 months have this type of speedo
because I also have a 7-65 and is different is the 20s increments
and remember after May 65 T34 gauges change to a SILVER center but still white needle _________________ 68 T34 1600 Automatic

It's like trying to nail Jello to a tree...just when I think I've got Type 34 parts identification nailed the speedometer like Pedro's comes along and makes me wonder.
The factory says that the large diameter bronze centered speedometer went into use with the new dash sheet metal on September 2nd, 1964. The original large speedometers I've seen from this period have white needles. I have a clock from 10/64 with white needles. The NOS 10/64 speedometer I have looks like this:
Parts like these were often made months in advance of need.
Thanks for sharing that picture, Pedro. |

Yeah, but Martin, yours is the smaller diameter version, versus Pedro's big diameter speedo. Plus, yours only goes up to 90 (last year for that according to Lee Hedges), while Pedro's goes up to 100.
Pedro's speedometer reminds me a lot of what's in my 65 Notch. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

My 1965 had bumper guards with a more squared off opening, and one was broken so I got another set from someone. These have one corner "cut" with a diagonal.
Is this a difference in years?

Are they both potmetal/aluminum? Just asking, as 65 was the last year for those. In 66 VW went with steel, and a more "rounded" end (no point). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yeah it is steel, and after looking closely I can see someone cut the diagonal part off to allow the light to be mounted.
The broken one is aluminum/potmetal (with the more pointed top) so it must be an earlier one. Thanks! |

I want to talk about the taillights. I read that US cars came with the red and amber lights and they had to be changed out to solid red. Does anyone have red and amber taillights in a US car? In buses the euro taillights have a different wire diagram and use separate bulbs. In the type34's if someone opens up the rear taillight will they find unused wires that were removed from the original euro lamps? Here is the euro lamp, does anyone have a pic of the US style showing the back of the housing? I wonder if the brake switches had to be changed and rewired too when the cars came to the US?

As far as I know, North American (there were no USA spec cars) spec cars got a full red lense. That was the only difference from Euro spec in the rear.
North American cars also had the side marker lights deleted, along with getting a different front turn signal housing and head lights. The turn signal housing got an extra terminal, for use as a parking light, and the headlights used SB13 parts for the sealed beam headlight units. The SB13 parts are T-34 only.
I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

I seem to remember that TUV didn't really mandate amber rear signals until about 1965. I know that the German versions of the Mercedes cars didn't have amber rear signals until about 1966 or 67. The W111 and W113 cars didn't get them OE until the '68 model year.
The all red lenses went NLA as replacements about that time since the German Government mandated amber. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

There may not have been official sales in the US, but there were definitely US-spec cars and parts. VW tolerated the gray market and was more than happy to supply the parts required for US registration.
@ Red Fau Veh: There's no difference in the wiring between the red/amber and all red taillights. The lenses are the only difference. |
You could special order NBs and T34s for USA but most of them were tourist delivery. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Yeah, but Canada got all of the cool cars the USA didn't get. That's why I called out North American spec, rather than USA spec. Sure it might be called out USA in the parts book, but Canada got the USA stuff standard. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
