Here is mine with a set of Thing Shop covers. They are 72 Beetle seat and do recline a little like in the picture. They do move back and fort for adjustment you can see that they do clear the rool bar and are very confortable.

I have beetle high back seats in the Thingster, as they fit on the existing rails.

They are PRP SUSPENSION EXTRA WIDE HI-BACK SEAT-GREY CLOTH/BLACK VINYL, and cecil has them in his disney styled Thing. I have to drive to Stockton to try them as they are extra wide, and I also a, extra wide, I think they will fit, or more correctly I will fit.

I am going to replace them with seats that allow me to use a harness.

They also have a rail set for mounting

This will allow me to use a harness properly when I bounce around off-road.

BTW, they are not cheap!

I've got beetle highbacks in mine now. Recovered white with black piping. If you've got lowbacks, I'd be interested in a trade, and I'm not that far from ya.

I can second the PRP seats. I have them in my CJ-5 and love them. I, too, am "extra wide" and the seats are very comfortable. Not cheap, but well made and tough.

hey Guys,

thanks for the info, I'll take a peek at those PRP seats you all mentioned.

Veedubtek, i'll PM you too about your suggestion.

Also,

I called the THING shop today, found out what the deal is with their hi back bucket seats and the core charge stuff.

Aparently they just want your seat frames no upholstery on them, makes them cheaper to ship and they want pictures so they can guage a price for the cores. They do have to rebuild them so I understand that method.
Sherry(with TTS) said I can pull the covers, take some pics and email her and they will let me know about the core price and we go from there.

Well, now I know the process.

And, you guys probably know this, but these seats dont recline, or if they do at all it's just a tad bit, not like a modern seat that you can lay back flat or anything.

I specificly wanted somthing to recline a bit to ease the back pain from "hugging the steering wheel" syndrome, so I'll have to mull this one.

anyways, Thanks for the suggestions, if anyone else wants to chime in
please do!

Thanks!

T

Just an update here as well,

about sending in some seat cores to put towards a set of TTS re-upholstered hi back buckets..

Sent TTS pictures of the seat frames that I stripped down at their request on 2 occasions (spoke with 2 people there) never got a no thank you, or any response back.

I'm not sure what to think here other than they weren't interested, would have been nice to get a call or an email letting me know. Shocked

anyway, I did swap seat backs, so now my driver seat back is firm on both corners and the passenger is ok due to the roll bar holding it firm in place.

Plan b is a used set of (don't do anything to them seats) or maybe looking at some seats from SCAT, I've mulled my 71 mustang hi backs but to reupholster them and buy the SCAT seat frames was going to be in the $300 range and that's getting close to just buying something redone already (not the THINGSHOP seats tho, they were going to be about $1200 since I didn't have any cores to send in.

may hold off here till I find something I like.

hey Folks,

I may have a set of seats coming my way, a buddy found some '01 Audi
seats at a junkyard that are tan/saddle color but they are all electric.
supposed to get a photo today...

Obviously they wont be electric in the THING if I get them installed.

My question is, if you were going to use electric seats,

what would be the best way to go here?

just use a 12v source to adjust the seats to my liking and leave it as is?
(right now that's all I can come up with, IF they even still function).

if they 12v stuff don't work, not sure how I'd manually adjust these things but it's worth a shot.

Any suggestions on that? Question

Pray If these seats are good, I'd get a set of the scat seat frames and I should be Ok, hope they are comfy!Pray

Thanks yall for any suggestions

T

Providing 12V power should get them functional.. Unless that crazy German engineering has them tied into a computer somewhere... Then, well, good luck..... Wink

Not sure you could adjust them, without power... Better hope they're in a comfortable spot when ha get them! Lol Rolling Eyes

I worked on German cars for the past 50 years and will say that they will have some sort of memory set up in them. Nothing is simple on German cars. Just find the motors if you can and jump the wires going to them with 12 volt battery and move them into position. Most motors just have a 2 wire connection, by reversing the power + - you can make them go back and forth or up and down or not if they are not burned up.LOL.The computer is usually attached to the seat.

There is a thing that has been appearing in my Craigslist searches that has Mini Cooper front seats in it.

I'm not a big fan myself of the look, but someone else might like it.

Stopped at a local junkyard and searched for some seats that would look ok in the Thing. The junkyard was picked pretty clean. They are closing permanently in October. Did find some good ones in an 05 Neon that look somewhat comfortable. Owner wanted $100. I said, it's a Neon. The whole car isn't worth $100. I'll give you $50. He hemmed and hawed a bit. Had to remove them myself, but $50 later I got them.

Can you post pics? Especially of how you adapted them?

these seats are out of a VW van or so I was told. Very sturdy and comfortable. And they fold flat.
I didn't like them at first, and since I have a set of early-mid 70's VW Beetle seat covers, I have been looking for the cores. But might just hang with these, maybe dye black

Middle seats from a later EuroVan GLS. I swear, the folks on here are the most ingenious folks I have seen on the Internet covering all sorts of Dubs. Even when not to my personal taste, I just shake my head in admiration.
